Travel Tips for Alameda

On the Edge of the Bay

by SteveOSF

"An East Bay City"

The City of Alameda is located on an island right off of Oakland in the San Francisco Bay. To reach it, one must cross one of several bridges, go through a tunnel called “The Tube”, or ride a ferry. Alameda contains a mixture of older and newer homes. Many of the newer homes are built on bay fill. It has some commercial as well as light industrial districts. Some of the old commercial streets house some interesting restaurants. Alameda was once home to the Alameda Naval Air Station which has since closed. The retired aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet has been converted to a floating museum and resides in Alameda.

An Island in the Bay Area

"Love being near the beach..."

Alameda is a great little island connected to Oakland via underwater tube or bridges. The beach area is great to walk your dog, run, or just enjoy the view of San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area. Kiteboarders and windsurfers love the easy beach access to launch their equipment.

"So many styles of homes on one island..."

For a small island, it's amazing how many different styles of homes are on one island. From beautiful Victorian mansions with manicured lawns, to Craftsman bungalows, to 70's era Ranch homes, to Palm Springs type condos along the beach, all the way to modern homes just being built. If you love studying architectural styles, this is a great place to visit.

What can I say? Went to Ole's for breakfast which is famous.. looked at some wonderful Victorian houses and drove around the old Navel base. Gosh if I owned the old base and the view of San Fran across the bay I would be EXTREMELY RICH. Neat and unexpected business have taken over the old hangers there.. like some .COM companies and even a movie studio.

We went to Alameda just for the day in order to visit the USS Hornet museum. My husband wanted to see it but I had a great time too. They gave out sailor hats for the kids and had a few different tours. I think we picked the wrong day to go though. We had to wait in alot of lines(for lunch and for the tours)but it was still great
