Arcata, CA: Great Place to Live?

by wonderlee

I am interested in moving to Arcata in October of this year (2004). I am a woman and may be moving alone or with a male friend. Any information about what it is like to live there would be very much appreciated.

Remote college town with very liberal ideas. Used to be lots of logging & fishing - not so much anymore. Large Coast Guard base up there. Scenery is beautiful, lots of outdoor stuff to do, doesn't really get too hot or too cold - pretty much always need a sweatshirt in the evenings no matter what time of the year it is. Watch out for the one way streets in Eureka - they can get confusing. If you don't mind being several hours drive over windy one-lane roads from any major anything - you'll do fine. If you need an airport nearby and 24 hour shopping of any kind - you need to re-think your decision. I grew up in rural no-where, tried college up there, left after the first semester 'cause it was even too rural & definately too liberal for me.

theres not a lot in Arcata. It seemed quite dull and sullen when I was there, although it may have been that constant fog that put me in a drab mood!

I love Arcata. I have lived here for almost 9 years, and never cease to be amazed by the natural and human originated beauty all around. It is true that is rural. But while it engenders most of the positives of rural life (e.g. knowing your neighbors, slower pace, pleasant strangers), it manages to escape some of the negatives, e.g. there is actually some good music, dancing and food. The music and dancing is sometimes hard to find and sadly there is no Ethiopian or really good Indian food, but all in all it is not nearly as remote as it seems. In response to a previous responder there are both an airport and 24-hour shopping. For some of the best late-late night sandwiches try Don's Donut's Spicy Southeast Asian Sandwich, em em good.

This area has historically been a hotbed of new ideas, and continues to be controversial and active - From marijuana laws to logging to Hydrogen Fuel cells.

When you get here, the Arcata Coop has a informational Kiosk on which you can find a place to rent. Be warned this is a very hard place to find work and shelter... but once you do I am sure that you will enjoy it - If you can handle the weather.

Travel Tips for Arcata

The pace is much slower than in SoCal. The people are friendlier and the scenery breath-taking. All of the times I have been here have been great. The weather is a bit chilly sometimes, but the sight seeing is always good.
I really enjoyed the day when my sister, my brother-in-law and I went 4 wheel driving on the beach. Splashing through the water and spraying it everywhere. Later we had a campfire on the beach and cooked hotdogs. It was so relaxing and fun.

My favorite pastime, other than traveling, is taking in a movie...Even though I live in a relatively small area we never suffer from a lack of theaters. The Minor Theater was built in 1914 and is the oldest continually active theater is the U.S. They actually have three or four screeens in this small building and the interior reflects its age, but nicely. The theater has a small lobby and in the winter some of the 'rooms' and auditorium can be down right chilly, but wearing a coat is kinda the norm for this part of the coast so it doesn't usually have much of a negative impact. The theater is actually said to be haunted with strange lights showing up in photos that were not there in the first place, but as long as 'they' don't sit next to me or try to eat my red vines I'm not too worried.

The 'Plaza' in the center of Arcata is something you won't miss when you visit! This is the setting for many of the city events! This place looks very inviting from this view; However, be aware of the many transients on the plaza! They are NOT all that friendly! Many can be a bit crude!

Arcata is a very liberal community...many things are tolerated to the extreme! Sounds good? Maybe so...until you try to walk around town and your rights are abused in the name of others freedoms. Arcata is a place very much on its own! If you were to drive 5miles in any other direction the attitudes get very different! Hard to just needs to experience it!

Palm Trees in the Redwoods? I have never figured this out!

Watch the sunset off the ocean

There are so many beautiful pictures to take here. Everywhere you look there is something spectacular. This was a simple shot just waiting for the sun to go down. It came out beautifully. A must see is the coastline with all the rocks and the wonderful sunsets.
