Marshall Gold Discovery Park: Where it all began
by Tom_Fields
In 1848, John Marshall stood on the bank of the American River at a mill that he and John Sutter were building. Looking into the cold, clear water, he noticed specks of gold dust. And the rest is history.
A replica of Sutter's original mill is at the site. It's also a good place for a moderate hike. Tour the historic buildings at the park. This is a great place for a day trip, or a stop.
It's on Hwy 49, about halfway between Auburn and Placerville.
Gold Rush Town and Seat of Placer County

"Gold Rush Town"
Auburn is another of the more important, big Gold Rush towns. Although not really ranking in the top tier with the likes of Nevada City, Grass Valley, or Placerville, it rose to prominence in the early 1850s and for a long time was the major town in the immediate area.
With the suburban growth around Sacramento, the SW portions of the county grew amazingly, leaving Auburn behind as the county's commercial and population centre. Now, the towns of Roseville and Rocklin are major suburbs of California's capital with about 160,000 people between them, while Auburn has only about 13,000 people. However, these two upstarts lack the history, character, architecture, and charm of Auburn.
American River - Near Auburn, CA
by Jokerit_pl
Since there isn't an entry for the American River in California, I chose the closest town in proximity to where I was on the river.
The pictures I have here were taken several years ago when I went whitewater rafting on both the South and Middle Forks of the American River.
