Worst Hotel Ever!

In almost 30 years of traveling, this is, without exaggeration the WORST hotel I have ever had the misfortune to select. Every negative review on this site is 100% accurate. The building can only be described as a slum. My wife and I checked in for a night’s stay in August, for which we paid almost $170.00.. My wife is disabled and, to her dismay, we found out that the building has no elevators (in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act), forcing us to trudge up several flights of rickety stairs. Unbelievably, they put us BOTH into a room that measured 8 x 12. There was just enough space for a small bed and a TV. It was stuffy, uncomfortable and claustrophobic. The carpeting was dirty and both the blanket and bedspread were stained. The room looked NOTHING like the bright, spacious rooms on the hotel’s website. The room overlooked an alleyway, just above a kitchen, and only had a very small window, providing no circulation and making the room hot and stuffy at all times. After just a few hours, we could no longer stand being in the room and, unable to secure alternate accommodations, left the island the same day we got there, having spent only four hours there. I subsequently sent a certified letter to the hotel, which was received and signed for, expressing my dissatisfaction and requesting a refund for the four hours we were there. Hotel management completely ignored my letter and never provided any response. Be warned: if you stay here, you’re either foolish or masochistic.

VICTORIAN STYLE HOTEL IN THE CENTER OF TOWN

The yellow Victorian Hotel just steps from the beach area in the center of town beckons one to the bygone days of Avalon when relaxing was sitting in the parlor looking out at the passing tourists. Today, the same thing is done at the Glenmore Plaza Hotel. The hotel offers free pickup and return from the heliport for Island Express helicopters and the docks for Catalina Express catamarans. Believe me, that is a great help, as the docks are about 4 blocks away and the heliport is even further. Walking with luggage to a hotel can be a drag.

The hotel's shuttle van was at the heliport within minutes and looked out of place as very few cars are allowed in Avalon and the golf cart rentals or the ones owned by residents are very quick and quiet. Good driver that even shuts the door electronically, so you don't have to lift a finger. Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful with questions about the latest restaurant and who is open late. Well, 9:00 pm is late in Avalon and most restaurants serve until about 9:30 pm in the off season. Great hotel for being close to everything in town.

Unique Quality: Remodeled room interiors with great beds. Many of the rooms have a jacuzzi tub that can soothe the muscles after a day of sightseeing the hilly streets of Avalon. Rooms are bright and cheerful and with 4 floors of rooms, the only drawback is the many stairs to climb if you are on one of the top floors. This is one of the oldest hotels in California, not just Avalon. Built in 1891 and you don't expect elevators. If you cannot climb stairs, let them know before you arrive that you need a first floor room. No pool, but the town beach is right down the block and the private beach of Descanso Beach Club just a little walk past the famous Casino building. All in all, a pleasant stay at the Glenmore Plaza Hotel in Avalon, Santa Catalina.
