Travel Tips for Avalon

Avalon Tip

by AdriannaTex

There are a lot of little funny things about Catalina that make it so fun. This is a picture of a tow truck on Catalina Island. There is a limit to how many full-size automobiles are allowed on the island, so most locals drive golf carts as their means of transportation around the city. Since there is only one inhabited city on the island, Avalon, the golf carts as transportation pose no logistical problem. In fact, they are the smartest way to get around. Tourists may rent these from many shops on the island. (Click on the picture to enlarge so you can see the towing gear!)

Go on a hike!!! We did the Hermit Gulch trail which takes you all the way up to the top where you can see Avalon on one side and the waters on the other side of the island! It is about a 3.5 mile hike that is ALL uphill so make sure that you have a pair of good shoes and are in good shape!

DON'T YAK A TI YAK, KAYAK

by travelgourmet

Your on your little Island and you want to get away from it all. Too many tourists yakking up a storm and disrupting your tranquility. What to do? Get out on the ocean away from the maddening crowd and kayak your way to peaceful bliss. The best place to do this is away from the crowds to begin with and that is to walk past the Casino and go to the Descanso Beach Ocean Sports location at Descanso Beach Club.

You will find that there are tours as well as on your on kayak journeys. They will make sure that you know all there is to know about paddling your Madeline around on the waters off Catalina. They also have snorkeling gear to rent out by the hour or half day. I have snorkeled the Descanso Beach area and must admit the giant Kelp beds are a bit scary to maneuver around. The best part is that all you need are your casual beach wear. All equipment is provided by the company.

Stay late and hang out on the beach

by cdpviola

I know this may sound strange, but Catalina is a great place for people watching from the beach, but especially at night. Many of the daytrippers leave a bit earlier and others all eat out once sunset hits, but Avalon at sunset is a breathtaking site and should savored.

A VIEW BELOW WHILE STILL ABOVE

by travelgourmet

The glass bottom boat ride is a must for every first time visitor and a great way to see the bottom of the sea. A teaching tool for the children, to better understand what lies beneath our oceans. The sight of the elephant kelp rising 15-20 feet from the bottom sands is amazing.

Many fish populate the kelp with the orange Garibaldi fish the one that draws the oohs and ahhs of everyone on board. The trip lasts less than an hour and is not expensive. If you are not claustrophobic then try the semi-submersible boat ride. It puts you right with the fish.
