A "blast from the past"
by spartan about Penny's Diner
The restaurant brings you back in time to the late 50's and early 60's. Hand dipped shakes, huge portions and early rock "n" roll music. The diner is open 24 hours, has a casual atmosphere, and serves American cuisine cooked to order. I ordered The Clubhouse Sandwich (slices of turkey, ham and bacon with lettuce, tomatoes and mayo on wheat toast) with seasoned fries and a coke.

"Barstow Memories from my childhood"
I lived in Barstow on and off from the ages of 5 until I was 13 years old (7th grade). I listed it on my VT page because it is a place I have been, but not as a "traveler". I here that Barstow is a little different now, however when I was growing up there we were quite poor and lived in a very poor neighborhood with the desert and the railroad tracks as our backyard. Even though we were poor, I played a lot with my brother Jared (who died in 2003). We played in the desert catching lizards and sticking our hands down rattle snake holes....yeh, great times! Our front yard was dirt because grass doesn't always grow in the desert. I remember having many multi cultural friends and most of our neighbors were hispanic.
I remember hanging the clothes on the line to dry because we didn't have a dryer, and you didnt' need one, the dry Southern California air dried your clothes just fine. I remember the many black widow spiders everywhere and the occasional scorpion. My crazy neighbors with the yard full of hens, horses, goats and everything, in the middle of the desert! I remember eating at PLATAS Mexican restaurant and no restaurant to this day has been able to beat the taste I remember the way their burritos and tacos tasted! From our house we could see the mountain where the military helicopters always flew over into the army base. Yes, Barstow, thanks for the wonderful childhood memories!
