The Golden Bear Inn is an older, below average motel in a below-average location that charges more than comparable hotels in other California cities. All-in-all they overcharge for a dump... $50-60 a night might be fair, but $80-100 a night is overpriced.
We stayed one night in June 2007. Though the staff was friendly, the hotel was run down and noisy, with a loud parking area and an even louder road just outside the windows. No air conditioning was a minor problem, but I was even less impressed by the 2-mile distance from the lively sections of town near the university. No Wi-Fi, bathroom windows that opened up to the street so anyone could peer in, but at least they had free ice and free parking.
It'll do for a cheap hotel in a pinch, but I wouldn't put my parents up here for the night.

In June 2007 I spent one night at Berkeley at the sub-par Golden Bear Inn. We entered town from the north on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge after visiting Muir Woods, I went for a jog through downtown, then we ate dinner at the Triple Rock Brewery on Shattuck Ave. The next morning we took a quick drive around UC Berkeley then were off to Sears Point to see the NASCAR race at Infineon Raceway.
