Calexico is a small border town on the California side of the US/Mexico Border about 1/2 way between San Diego,CA and Yuma, AZ. There is not a whole lot there. Perhaps are you thinking of a different city?

The Imperial Dunes are a few miles to the east. You're supposed to pay at the I-8/Grays Well entrance ($25/day), but if you want to just walk around you should be able to talk your way in.
The Salton Sea is close by as well. It's only become a tourist attraction in recent years because of its miles of empty, undeveloped streets, abandoned buildings, and an ecological disaster in the sea itself.
To the west is Desert Tower which is pretty interesting. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/CAJACdesertview.html
Yeah, but not much in Calexico itself. It and nearby El Centro are both pretty nasty towns. Mexicali (the other side of the border) is alright and has decent restaurants.
Hope that helps.
