In order to get an early start to Hearst Castle in nearby San Simeon the next morning, Kat booked the Fog Catcher Inn in Cambria, about 5 miles to the south. San Simeon has some hotels of it's own but most seemed to be budget chain hotels without a lot of ambiance. The Fog Catcher is on Moonstone Beach, there's access to a beachfront walking path right across the street. Soon after I took a photo of the beach around 5 pm, the fog did indeed roll in and stayed there until after we left the next morning.
Our room at the Fog Catcher was enormous, 2 queen beds, a gas fireplace, a small kitchen with a coffee maker, microwave, and a small refrigerator along with a couple of complimentary bottles of water. There's an ironing board and iron in the room and a TV with a decent selection of channels. The bathroom had a heat lamp, plenty of hot water, toiletries include soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. There are bathrobes and a hairdryer. There's a very nice deluxe continental breakfast in the morning with pastries, fruit, cereal, eggs, sausages, juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, toast plus my personal favorite, do it yourself waffles (ha, ha, now Kat has seen me cook!) The Fog Catcher has a heated pool but we didn't use it.

Before we became permanent residents of Cambria, my wife and I stayed at the Whitewater many times. I have, and I do not exaggerate, sat in the bed in room 2 and watched otters through my binoculars, while eating my delicious delivered-to-the-door continental breakfast. It's a special place, and owner and staff keep it that way.

A beautiful room with a view. by Robachu1 This Inn is a AAA four diamond property which is one reason we chose to stay there. We were not disappointed. The quality of the rooms and the quality of the service were excellent. We especially enjoyed the long walks along the coastline in the early mornings and just before sunset.
Friendly owners, great location, great rooms, and a great breakfast, what more could you ask for in a B&B? by miromi a warm and welcoming hostel owner took us up to our room and we were delightfully surprised: it seems more like a bed and breakfast than a hostel! but a hostel it is, with a cozy room to curl up on, rest your feet on the bear footrests and read away at the New Yorker or other great literature. There are so many beautiful details with personal notes from the hostel owner... many are her family antiques and everywhere we turned there were fresh flowers and beautiful music.
although the hostel is not on the shore, it is in Cambria and has so many niceties that I can't even begin to list them... highly recommended for anyone visiting California!

by kayleigh06 When we got to Cambria, we had a problem trying to get somewhere to stay over night as the other end of Main Street was too busy and full up. So as we kept driving, we came across this small place, which was taking vacancies, and we decidded to stay here. When we got here, we had a room, which was of decent size (considering the place looked so small) and it was in a quieter end of town with a few bars not too far from the hotel.
If you are looking for a pool, then this place is not for you. it never had breakfast. It was literally a bed, shower, sink, TV in a room. If you aren't looking for everything in a room, for a good price then this is a good place for you too stay. moon setting on the ocean taken 100' from my suite by litlbitmorluv, 1 more photos This hotel (and others in the Pacifica chain) could not be better. It's quaint and picturesque with thoroughly modern amenities, steps away from the beach and extraordinarily fine dining. The breakfast included fresh-squoze juice and was excellent. Some rooms are pet-friendly. If you shop different sites or call them directly, rates are beyond reasonable (do not go for the "rack" rate, we saved 50% over that, paying only $150/nt for an ocean-view suite). The grounds are lovely, the staff is beyond accomodating. We spent two nights there last week, and could find nothing to complain about - and I'm a professional complainer! A thoroughly wonderful establishment, I'd recommend it to anyone.
The pool and jacuzzi are protected by a glass windbreak and view the ocean. I snuck out in the middle of the night to capture the full moon setting on the ocean (!) after earlier photographing an astonishing sunset. Nearby Cambria is charming and also close-at-hand Hearst Castle is not to be missed. This place is a jewel.
