My 8 year-old daughter came home one night and told me that she had met her academic reading goal. I was so excited and proud of her that I said we should take a trip to California to see the Hearst Castle. She asked me when we should go and I replied "tonight!".
We left that night from Kansas and flew out of Kansas City (KCI) and into San Francisco. We had a lovely trip driving down highway 1 along the Pacific coast. The next day we went to the castle and ate lunch on the ocean's beach.
The next day we came back home. What a wonderful surprise that was for my little girl. She really deserved it!
It was more magnificent than I had ever imagined. This trip left such an impression on me that I have officially named William Randolf Hearst as my biggest hero this year!
Doesn't everyone dream of eating lunch on the Pacific Ocean's beach in central California with a good glass of wine from the area and your beautiful daughter and best friend in tow?
"If you only had an hour to spend in San Francisco, what would you see?" This is the question I asked my daughter and my friend, Lisa. At the same time, they both said "The Golden Gate Bridge". I responded, "good choice!" And so we drove to the bridge, spent 10 minutes there and headed for the airport.
