marathon

by mjqd

We are coming from NH so my husband can run the marathon on his 60th birthday!
We are thinking of staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. I am hoping to be able to see him running a few times during the marathon. Does anyone know the course? We do have the map from the marathon page but being unfamiliar with roads, it's hard to get a handle on the area. Will I be able to walk or drive to points to view him from that hotel? I'm sure some of the roads will be closed for the race, does anyone have any suggestions for getting around to the start, finish and a couple of points along the route that I would be able to see him?
Also, how is the weather there then? Long pants, shorts, sweaters, jackets?
We got over a foot of snow in the past week here so we are definitely looking for a warmer place soon! Thanks!

Looks like you are in a pretty good spot. As near as I can tell from the route map they do a couple of legs that turn just a block or so from your hotel. Easy walk to at least three turns where you should be able to see your hubby. I don't live there, but my mother lives just a mile or so inland off La Costa. You will want to dress in layers as it can get cool and damp near the ocean, but be fairly warm when the fog burns off and the sun comes out.

Travel Tips for Carlsbad

A small or a large city?

by matcrazy1

That is the question :-). Carslbad has over 80,000 citizens, now.
Hmm... I was surprised: as for me Carlsbad didn't look even for 30,000 (in compare to other AMERICAN cities).

There are vinicities but they seem not to be so crowded, no house by house I mean so they look more like a countryside than like vinicities of large city. Hmm... maybe I didn't notice the city limits driving along the road S21.

Mixed architecture of houses

by matcrazy1

It seems that Carlsbad (and generally Southern California) are great areas for those who love architecture and love to watch beautiful houses.
Even driving S21 you can see many unusual and unique houses - some of them are examples of very, very beautiful architecture, indeed.

Not only the population is mixed there, but the architectural style of houses as well.

A Landmark At Carlsbad City Limits

by lmkluque

The Pea Soup Andersen Wind Mill is located near the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon at the south end of Carlsbad. It is one of the two major lagoons in this city. The other, Buena Vista, is at the north end.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon is unique as it is a healthy tidal bed with a large wetlands supporting several endangered species and also premits recreational and commercial use.

Carlsbad Aquafarm is a commercial growing facility for mussels. Hubbs-SeaWorld has a research facility and seabass nursery. Several aquatic sports, such as sailboarding, kayaking, sail boating, power boating and jet skiing are available in various areas of the lagoon in keeping with efforts to maintain ecological balance.

Buena Vista Lagoon is at the northern end of Carlsbad. The watershed begins on the western slopes of San Marcos Mountains, turns into a lagoon and ends at the Pacific Ocean. It is 21 square miles and follows inland for more than 10 miles.

At this lagoon you'll find the Ecological Reserve which offers Nature tours. While driving around parts of the lagoon, I saw hikers and people on bikes and I know that it is a favorite for birdwatchers and those who like to take nature walks.

The 101!

by matcrazy1

The Highway S21 goes along the Pacific Ocean south of Carlsbad's downtown. It's named Carlsbad Boulevard.
Northwards it goes a little far inland to Oceanside and it's named South Pacific Highway.

The Highway S21 is a part of historical Highway 101 (the Pacific Coast Highway). Affectionately referred to by locals as simply “The 101”, this legendary highway follows the Pacific Coast from the warm, sandy beaches of Southern California to the wild, rugged coastline of the Pacific Northwest.

From Vicky (expresso):
I've never haerd of S-21, everyone knows the Pacific Coast Highway as "101" -- suggest you not even reference S-21 because it means nothing. Everything north of San Diego-La Jolla is called "North County" and the little beach towns are laid-back, relaxed, spiritual and arty.

While driving aroud the Holiday Inn hotel on Palomar Airport Road looking for more information about Pea Soup Andersen's I found that Pea Soup is now closed and next to the hotel a few other restaurants popped up.

They looked busy and interesting.
