Discovering Carlsbad

by nino224

Gonna be in Carlsbad in early April with the wife and 4 y.o., probably staying at one of the Hilton resorts. I'll probably rent a car as well. I want to take my son to Legoland and Wild Animal. We like the beach, sightseeing, good food, and discovering new places. Would appreciate any suggestions, advice, and tips. And if anyone is familiar with the Hilton properties let me know what you think. Thanks!

Ranger has offered some great options. I would mention that what she called, "Sealand is a very popular attraction and children love it...." Is actually, "SeaWorld," so if you want to look it up on-line you'll see what she means.

Also, in La Jolla, there is a shop that for a smallish fee will allow you access down to the beach where there are tide pools. This is really a fun place for little ones as they can see a few sea creatures. Just make sure you go there at low tide.

The San Diego Zoo has a nice little children's petting zoo with basically mild mannered animals the kids can mingle with. At certain times they also have crafty things to do and little demonstrations geared for smaller children.

I have more info on these places on my Carlsbad, La Jolla and San Diego pages if you're interested.

Hi Barbara,

I know how easy it is to confuse these type of names, even when we've gone to the places, they are so often interchanged.

I hope you have a great time when you are in Carlsbad again this year.

Travel Tips for Carlsbad

Visit during the spring time...

by Richmond

Visit during the spring time when you can see the hillsides near Legoland abloom at the'Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch'.You can walk along dirt paths through thousands of ranunculuses against a backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. A garden shop features bulbs and blooms grown at the nursery. There are too many tourists but still it is an awesome site. Located at Paseo del Norte, just east of I-5 telephone 760-431-0352 March 1 - April 30 daily 10-6 admission is $4

Why do they drive SUVs?

by matcrazy1

It seems that quite a lot of locals drive SUVs. Why? They don't have steep mountain roads, haevy snow fall or unpaved roads there. Why don't they buy convertibles or just midsize or large "normal" cars?
Do they ever use their SUVs as hard working cars? Or they just love them so much - like me :-)).
Any suggestions?

From my friend Dave (shdw100) from Kansas City, Missouri, USA:
People here drive SUV's for various reasons: to get away on the weekend and head to the mountains where the dirt roads are, for winter driving if you live where the snow flies, or for even being able to see over the traffic when driving and get a bird's eye view of what's ahead. There are various reasons, another one of which can also be a status symbol, meaning the bigger the SUV, the more wealth you want to portray to other people.
Thank you Dave :-).

Victorian mansion

by matcrazy1

This elegant old Victorian mansion (over 100 years old) stands on the right side of the main highway San Diego ---> Los Angeles (S-21). It houses Neiman's Restaurant now and look really very, very beautiful. No wonder - the building was renovated by its new owners a few years ago.

The medcine for VT addiction?

by matcrazy1

We were driving Pacific Coastal highway 101 (marked on my map as S21) northwards with Linda (Imkluque) and passing hmm... look at my picture on the left. Linda explained me what it was: the Self Realization Fellowship Temple and Ashram Center in Encinitas, just a few miles before Carlsbad.
Do they treat VTA there? (Virtual Travel Addiction). Hmm.. they maybe helpful, I suppose. But as I know there is no medcine for this disease but a strong support group. But you can try and call: +1 (760) 436-7220 and ask about meditations for you :-)).

On my picture:
Hermitage and Meditation Gardens. Paramahansa Yogananda established the Self-Realization Fellowship Ashram Center in Encinitas in 1937. Here, at the Hermitage where he lived for many years, he wrote his Autobiography of a Yogi, widely regarded today as a modern spiritual classic.

From Vicki (expresso):
Places like the Self-Realization Fellowship and Ravi Shankar's Foundation: http://www.ravishankar.org
in Encinitas are common. Ravi Shankar lives in Encinitas (he taught George Harrison the sitar).

Italian with a family touch

by BLewJay about Jay's Gourmet Restaurant

If you blink, you'll miss this restaurant...but the smell of the food and the lines waiting to get in to eat will bring you back. This is a family run business which has many loyal followers, the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is cozy. We started off with a homemade bowl of Clam Chowder (clams, pototoes, onions, corn, bacon) which was simply delicious. For the entrée, LJ selected the Breaded Shrimp Parmigiana (breaded jumbo shrimp pan fried then sautéed in marinara sauce & served over linguini with mozzarella cheese) while I had Linguini Imperial (diced jumbo shrimp & and baby clams sautéed in a red cream sauce and served over linguini).
