Full disclosure--didn't stay here, just walked in the lobby but it was such a stunner and was so interesting I thought I'd tell people about it.
First off, it's owned in part by Doris Day and her (now deceased) son, Terry. There's Day memorabilia all over the place (which can be a little disconcerting if you're not aware that she owns it), but somehow it's presented in a pretty tasteful way. The lobby, at least, is warm and pretty and the hotel is extremely pet friendly which is part of why it interested me (how could it not be--Day is one of the most public animal rights activists in the world). This is definitely going to be my first choice next time I come to Carmel.
It's very close to the main drag and the rates can go as low as $132 in the off season. Pets are only $30 extra as are people.
Unique Quality: Aside from just being a beautiful building, the fact that it's owned by Doris Day makes it especially unique.
