The first hotels were fully booked but this one THE MONTE VERDE INN had a huge appartment free at a reasonable price. The plus was that it was located right opposite Carmel's mayor's office where the ex-mayor in 1986-88 was Clint Eastwood!

Blue Sea, Fresh Air, Perfect Summer in Carmel

by lisabel_smith

We stayed at the Monte Verde Inn. Excellent staff. We were a group of three families that stayed at the Monte Verde Inn. It was a great experience and we enjoyed every bit of it.

Enjoyed the delicious breakfast and hung out at the small coffee shops in the town.

Because its a budget hotel, and for the price it is a very good deal.

We recommend Monte Verde Inn to anyone who is planning a trip to Carmel-by-the-sea.

After a long and so pleasant drive along the scenic drive with views drown in fog (Couldn't see a thing!) the town of Carmel-By-The-Sea appeared.

No plan to stop here but it looked so appealing that a place to stay overnight had to be found quickly as the night was already falling. Hotel by the sea

by GUYON

I do not find any hotel with a direct access to the ocean either in Carmel or in Monterey or in Seaside.
Does this kind of accomodation exist ? Or Clint eastwood has forbidden the building of hotels along the sea shore.

Thanks
RAY

Guyon, check out Pacific Heights which is right next to Monterey. There are several B&Bs and motels right on or near the ocean there. We stayed at a cute little place called the Red Rose or something like that. It was right next to a walking path along the coast.. inexpensive, too, about 10 years ago.

Carmel, probably not on the water. In Pacific the Green Gables is on the water. In Monterrey there are lots of places on the bay. The Monterrey Inn is on the bay . It has otters in front and free binoculars to look at them. You can walk to cannery row or fishermans warf from there.

By the way, Clint Eastwood hasn't been the mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea for about 15 years. And he never had any jurisdiction over Monterey or Seaside!

The seashore on the Monterey Peninsula is not, thank God, the same kind of experience as it is in many other dreadfully built-up places. There are no monstrous hotels on the beach--probably because the beach in Central CA isn't really a good place for sunbathing or swimming. The Carmel beach is accessible on foot from the center of this very small town, so if you stay there, you can just walk to it. If you stay anywhere within a few blocks of the beach in Monterey or Pacific Grove, you can also walk to it (check the hotel address on Mapquest.com to see where it's physically located). Seaside is a little more car-intensive--I'm not sure there are many motels close to the water. It is more of a residential area.

Travel Tips for Carmel-by-the-Sea

Layers and a Light

by Rixie

Bring layers and a warm jacket, as the weather is changeable. It can be sunny and warm midday and turn cold and windy by dinnertime. I'm almost always cold when I go to Carmel, but this time I was prepared -- sweater, scarf, thick hooded jacket -- and I was fine. If you're planning to walk around at night, bring a small pocket flashlight. Some of the side streets can get dark, and the pavement can be uneven.
