Diamond Hotel: Diamond in the Rough

Walking in downtown Chico near 4th Street you can see an older building with an interesting cupola. At first I thought it was an older commercial building only to learn that it was the recently renovated Diamond Hotel.

Now I had listened to friends talk about the Diamond Hotel. What I heard was that it was once a luxurious turn of the century hotel that it had been fixed up by a local developer. However I have never stayed it nor had any idea where it was located.

When you see the Diamond Hotel from the street its majestic presence almost seems out of touch with Chico. The renovation that was completed in 2005 features a lot of exterior stucco but with a stunning copper covered cupola on the top of the building. The hotel originally opened in 1904 but served as a hotel for only about 12 years until it fell on bad times. Over the years it saw many uses and in the 1980's it was boarded up as a unsafe building.

There are approximately 50 rooms on the four stories of the hotel. On the ground level there is Johnnie's Restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Diamond Hotel is as impressive to look it as it must to be stay in. Trip Advisor rates the hotel as the best liked hotel in the City of Chico.

Best Western, if you want a...

Best Western, if you want a recognizable name. Or any of the numerous family-run places in town. There is quite a range in price throughout the city, depending on what amenities you are looking for. I did find, however, that a few places that looked good on the web, didn't look as great in person. There are numerous bed & breakfasts (one pictured here) as well. Coutyard Marriott: Clean, Affordable Accomodations

The Courtyard Marriott, and it's counterpart the Marriott Residence, are recent additions in Chico. The Courtyard is perfectly adequate for a small town hotel. It's a clean and affordable option, especially if you'd like to stay closer to the south side of town. I highly recommend using priceline to book any hotel in Chico, as you'll be able to get much better rates than advertised by the hotel.

New construction, indoor pool and fitness center, next to Cal Skate and freeway adjacent.
