question regarding Residence Inn

by waynebeau

My cousin will be visiting El Segundo in August and is considering
staying at the Residence Inn in the 2100 block of El Segundo Blvd.
Has anybody stayed there? opinion of it? is it in a good area? safe?
clean? How far from downtown El Segundo? restaurants?
She is middle aged and would possibly be arriving/leaving there late in the evenings on the way to/from a medical facility in the Inglewood area where
her husband will be having surgery.
Opuinions, please.
Thanks.

RE: question regarding Residence Inn

by mccalpin

This area, as I remember it (I worked for two years in Torrance) is a business area, with more offices than anything else. I don't think that coming in late will be a problem, although, to be fair, I'm not a middle-aged woman. I have stayed a number of times at a Marriott (I think) that is just about at the same location on the next major road to the south (Rosecrans) (i.e., about 3/4ths of a mile away); it was definitely a nice place with a number of restaurants nearby and quite safe to walk through in the evening.

Less than a mile to the south on Sepulveda is the Manhattan Village shopping center (or whatever it is) at the intersection of Sepulveda and Rosecrans. Look for Yahoo maps, and enter 2100 El Segundo Blvd and you'll see it on the map.

If you go to the beach here and continue south, you will go through a number of attractive former beach communities like Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and the like. In the evenings, these beach areas (actually just in a little way from the beach) will be busy with people eating and drinking in all the local bars and restaurants...the biggest problem she'll have is finding someplace to park.

In her immediate neighborhood, I don't know that there will be many pedestrians - not that it's unsafe so much as there just aren't very many. But a short drive to the south, she find plenty to do and can get out and wonder around there.

P.S. I have no idea if El Segundo even has a downtown...I confess I never noticed it.

RE: question regarding Residence Inn

by marie&ariel

El Segundo is a safe area for the most part. As Bbill said, just south of El Segundo you will find very nice beach towns. Antoher thing to keep in mind, El Segundo is right next to LAX Airport. This does create traffic but also brings safety to the entire area. Now, Inglewood is not the safest town. I would advice her not to try to find places to eat around there. She will be better off heading south or even west, to Marina del Rey, which is not far from El Segundo.

RE: question regarding Residence Inn

by karenincalifornia

Residence Inns are consistently reliable, and El Segundo is safe and clean. It is a commercial area with a number of business headquarters, as the previous posters said. I am sure the Residence Inn is up to business traveler standards. My employer puts employees up at that hotel, so it can't be bad. It does have airport traffic noise, so hopefully that is not a problem.

There is no downtown El Segundo, but just south of El Segundo is the very charming town of Manhattan Beach, and then to the south of that is Hermosa Beach (my former home). Both towns have wonderful cafes and restaurants.

I am a bit worried about your cousin driving around Inglewood late in the evenings. Inglewood is not the safest part of the LA area. She should leave Inglewood before it gets dark.

Stop at the Douglas station...

for some thought-provoking words. The Metro Green Line rail stop at Douglas is not only a convenient way to get around butis a piece of art. Follow carved prose going down the stairs and be captivated by the gigantic metalwork hand.

High school

by TinKan

The town of El Segundo is very proud of the High School and it's standings in the state.

The building is a brick building and looks like a university. The grounds are very well maintained and it is another good place to walk around. Just do not walk around when school is in session.
