Weather or not.....
by Royal63
Our weather here is mild year round.
Winter- expect rain and temperatures in the 30-40 degree range.
Spring- expect rain, overcast, sun and temp.'s in the 50-60 degree range.
Summer- expect mostly sunny days with temp.'s ranging from 60-70 degrees.
Fall- expect mostly sunny days with temp.'s in the 60-70 degree range.
It rarely snows here. It does cool down at night. Sweaters, jackets, scarves, sweatshirts and jeans. Also wool socks if you are hiking, comfortable shoes for walking in, sandals for beach time and a swimsuit. Even if you stay at one of the nicer places, don't worry about "formal" wear. Eureka is a very casual city. Unless you want to dress up. Eureka is very "touristy" most of the time, so you will not feel out of place whatever you decide to wear. There are many stores here if you forget anything. We also have 2 hospitals should an emergency occur. A camera is a MUST! Bring lots of film or digital cards. Make sure you bring mosquito repellant if you go camping. Also plenty of sunscreen. Don't forget your flip flops, beach towel and floating devices.
Crater Lake
by JLBG
Crater Lake (page to come) is located in Southern Oregon in the Cascade Mountain range, 160 km inland from the Pacific Ocean. Crater lake was born 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama had a blasting eruption that blow out the summit and left instead a volcanic basin named a caldera that further on filled with water. The surface of the water is at an elevation of 1,883 meters while Mount Mazema stood at 3,660 meters! It is 592 meters deep. The missing elevation has been blown out, which makes an enormous amount.
Lava Beds National monument
by JLBG
The Lava Beds National monument (page to come) lies in the far north east corner of California. It is a striking example of eruptions where the outer lava cools and gives a solid crust while the inner lava remains fluid enough to flow out, giving empty tubes that can be visited.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park

The tallest trees on earth, these are something no California visitor should miss. The coastal redwood forests run from the Oregon coast all the way to Big Sur. They are related to the more famous Sequoias, which are not as tall, but much larger in circumference.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park includes many of the tallest trees, living in ancient groves along Highway 101. One of the best is the Rockefeller Forest, which is along Mattole Road. Another is Founders Grove, just off the highway.
Carson Mansion
by JLBG
The Carson House is the jewel of the Eureka Historic District. Two famous architects from San Francisco, Samuel and Joseph Newsom built it for William Carson. One hundred highly skilled workers built it in two years. It uses extensively precious exotic woods, onyx, stained glass and plaster works,
It is considered as “one of the most written about, and photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps in the United States” . The Carson family owned it until the 50’s.
Photos 1 and 2 give a general view of the mansion.
Photo 3 shows it from the side. It is now home to the Ingomar private club
Photo 4 shows some detail of this extraordinary architecture that influenced further building in Eureka.
William Carson was a wealthy citizen of Eureka that built his wealth in the lumber industry.
