Moving To Fort Bragg, Ca. - Things To Know

by Girlefty

This question goes out to local residents of Fort Bragg. Any helpful hints, comments, things to know about living here? I'm looking to relocate in the Spring. Interested in any websites and info on the locals, online chat rooms, housing, atmosphere of the town, live music, socializing, etc. Thanks!

It's like any military place. I had a friend from high school who used to be station there. It's in the middle of the dessert. It's a long drive. The army does have a golf course. There's nothing there :(

Thanks rke but....I think you may be thinking of Fort Bragg, North Carolina? The Fort Bragg I am researching is on the Northern California Coast. ( :

I don't think he's thinking of the airborn fort in N.Carolina either (middle of a desert?)

I have only been around Ft. Bragg a little and am not expert to advise you. I think it's a very nice little place and there are other towns around like Arcata so you can get a choice of ambience. I think the coastal exposure there is superb...not good for swimming, but a great place to hang on beach, kayak, etc. It's not far from there to the Trinity Alps area (and all those Humbolt county marijuana fields :-) I have looked at it before and thought it would be a nice place to live.

Hi. Well neither of those guys live here. I have for ten years and we're NOT in the desert, not a military base (unless you want to count the Civil War period) nor does anyone bother to drive up to Humboldt for much of anything. This is a small community of long time, multi-generational locals, S.F. expatriates, misfits and people that work in the logging, tourism and fishing industries. It's isolated, beautiful and full of wonderful experiences just waiting for you to create them. OK music scene, housing is both hard to come by and spendy, bring your own job, don't expect an instant warm up from the locals (people that have moved here from somewhere else are allot nicer and less clique-ish) and be prepared to spend winters by the light of a hurricane lamp reading a good book. The power goes out in storms. All in all, it's a nice little place to live if you're used to taking care of things yourself and don't mind a bit of hard work to get it done. Then again, it's an overnight trip to the big city and all that "culture".

"Slow down and relax on the North Coast."

Fort Bragg is a great place to get away from big city stress. As soon as you arrive, the sound of the ocean starts helping you relax and forget the stresses of daily life. Take a walk on glass beach, ride the Skunk Train, head down to Noyo Harbor and watch the harbor seals & fishing boats, stroll through the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens out to the ocean bluffs, rent a bicycle and ride on the old logging road through MacKerricher State park, wander the beaches and tidepools, or grab a book from the used bookstore downtown and head out to the beach with a lounge chair and spend the day reading. It will be time to go home way too soon.
