Travel Tips for Fort Bragg

Skunk Train

by Tom_Fields

Fort Bragg's Skunk Train acquired its name because of the gasoline-powered locomotives used in the old days. People often smelled them before seeing them. This train, now using steam locomotives, goes deep into the redwood forest east of Fort Bragg, and still delivers mail. It serves as a link between people in the forest and the outside world. It only runs during the summer months. There is a brief stopover deep in the forest, where the train turns around nearby. A delightful, narrated trip.

Some days, the Skunk Train even has live entertainment. When I rode it, a local folk singer, and retired railroad employee, sang old-timey railroad tunes.

Fort Bragg California

"WELCOME TO FORT BRAGG"

This sleepy Northern California Coastal Town is not only my home, but that of well known Artists and Musicans. About 4 hours North of San Francisco it is worth the drive. You will go to sleep to the sound of the ocean crashing against the tall roughed cliffs. Hear the sounds of the seals barking and the sea gulls dancing in the sky.

Wonderful food, Brewery with great local beer, yes, you are in wine country also, coffee shops, quaint stores. It is the last of the Flower Children's Haven..a definite "Blast From the Past".

Blue green water, flowers, it is like heaven driving up Hwy 1. Lots of curves so keep your eye on the road or pull over and enjoy the view.
