Kentbein's new Fresno Page
I had the GREAT fortune of working at Sequoia National Park during the summer of my sophmore year in college. This is truly a part of heaven (even though it IS in California!!!!) Just kidding, California! Sequoia National Park and California are lovely, memorable places.
The first thing you will notice driving up to Sequoia from Fresno is Moro Rock. This is a huge outcrop sticking out of the mountain at about a 20 degree angle! This is also where all the kids working at the Park hang out on off hours when they're not camping in the mountains. It's also the site where one of our coworkers flew down the valley in a hang glider, to be promptly arrested by the Visalia cops! He said it was worth it!!!
Sequoia is known for the tremendous redwood trees. These are 2000+ year old trees several hundred feet tall and wide enough to drive a LARGE car through. Don't get a redwood splinter under your skin, though! Ouch!!! They burn for hours. The ferns are taller than people. The scale of this forrest is astounding!
Hiking and camping in the Continental Divide of the mountains are the great attraction. Working at a national park is the single greatest event on the planet, too. Kids from all over the country "working" (quote unquote) at the place and it's just a ball. Given the proverbial three wishes, going back to my summer at Sequoia would be the first wish on my list!!!!
