"Garlic Capital of the World"
Gilroy is know as the "Garlic Capital of the World" but not because we grow a lot of garlic here anymore. We do have a processing plant that makes garlic and onion powders, so this town smells wonderful, especially in the warmer months. During the last weekend in July the Garlic Festival is held. The best thing about the festival is the food. You can find just about anything garlic (ice cream, wine, popcorn along with all the nornal things). Gilroy can get pretty hot in July, our afternoon temps are usually in the 90's, but it cools off at night. Gilroy is only about 25 miles from the coast. Monterey Bay is just over the Santa Cruz mountain Range, so visiting Santa Cruz or Carmel is only about an hours drive. Gilroy still has a lot of agricultural areas so you kind of feel like your in the country.
