Travel Tips for Healdsburg

The Russian River and its Valleys

by VeronicaG

The Russian River wanders through Cloverdale to Santa Rosa, then flows out to the Sonoma Coast and the Pacific Ocean.

This is a lush, fertile grape growing area containing 100 wineries and three wine districts: Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley.

A route known as the Russian River Wine Road takes you to all three districts, where you'll find wine tours, lodging and special events, such as:

2nd Saturday Along the Wine Road--every month
Winter Wineland-mid-January
Barrel Tasting-early March
Crab and Fennel Fest-early March
Passport Weekend-end of April
Pick of the Vine-towards the end of April
Taste of the Valley-early June
Sonoma County Showcase and Wine Auction-third week of July
Grape to Glass-mid-August
Sonoma County Jarvest Fair-early October
A Wine and Food Affaid-early November

For more information on these events or more, see: www.wineroad.com or call 800-723-6336

Bicycle heaven

by karenincalifornia

Sonoma County is a perfect place for bicycling. Some roads like West Dry Creek have little or no shoulders, making them somewhat unsafe. Try to stick to the roads with decent shoulders, like Dry Creek Road.

The weather is usually perfect for bicycling. It is generally balmy year-round, except for a couple of hot months in summer and some rain in the winter. Humidity is low. The scenery is fabulous. The best part about bicycling here is the ability to stop at a winery for wine tasting enroute!

Little known fact: In California, it is a misdemeanor to operate a bicycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Having said that, I don't know of a single person who has ever been arrested for DUI on a bicycle. Nonetheless, please exercise caution. Sometimes, the drivers in cars can be very unaware or just plain reckless. And keep in mind - this is the wine country, so some of those drivers will be over the legal limit for alcohol. As a bicyclist, you just need to be on guard at all times, tipsy or not. Either a mountain bike or road or racing bike will work. There are not a lot of unpaved roads - most routes are on the paved roads with shoulders. Some wineries (but not many in Sonoma) have unpaved roads to their tasting rooms, which is why, between my mountain or road bike, I'll usually take the mountain bike.

The California Bicycle Helmet Law applies only to people 18 years and younger. Personally, I think it is insane to ride a bicycle on any California road without a helmet, particularly if you are sharing the road with automobiles and trucks.

Lake Sonoma State Park. ...

by Rasta_Rob

Lake Sonoma State Park. Located at the north end of the Dry Creek valley, Lake Sonoma is a great place for camping, fishing, watersports, and hiking. The lake is surrounded by an 8,000 acre wildlife area, with several good hiking trails. For campground reservations and additional information about Lake Sonoma, call (877) 444-6777.

Incredible Experience

by WulfstanTraveller about Cyrus

Cyrus is provably the ritziest, most upscale restaurant in Healdsburg. It is exceedingly expensive, but outstanding in food quality, variation, service, and ambience. The staff is large for the size of place and they meticulously care for every element and detail of service.

Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery

by GracesTrips

This is a very picturesque winery. The grounds are meticulously manicured. They provide two wine tastings at different prices. One as you walk into the main building has several retail items for sale as well. The other for their more expensive wines down in a basement area with an awesome view of the casks. Ferrari-Carano (not related to the Italian automobile) family makes money from owning hotels and casinos all around the world. Their vision was to attract guests to their hotels with great amenities and food. The winery (we were told) is more of a "hobby" rather than a business venture. The wines are a little pricier than most. My boss and his wife like their Chardonnay. For the price, I think we found some better wines in the area. But, you should see this place. It is definitely spectacular!

Open daily 10am - 5pm.
