Hotel del Coronado: A Historic Grand Resort
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hotel del Coronodo, affectionately known asThe Del, has been recently renovated and is an example of Victorian architecture at its finest.

This hotel enjoys fame because it was the setting of one of Marilyn Monroe's movies and because of its historical/architectural significance.

When you first see the hotel, it "leaps" out as a huge white edifice with red roofs with many turrets. It is lovely set against the sugar- white sands and the aqua -blue Pacific Ocean.

The inside is quite elegant with stately solid furniture, subdued fabrics, and subtle lighting.
The rooms are large and luxurious with service to match the beauty.

Recently voted "Best Hotel Dining" by the California Restaurant Association, the Hotel del Coronado offers an unmatched dining experience." Here are some of the choices available:

    1. Prince of Wales is Romantic fine dining either inside or outside. It's known for its fine wine list and Chef Jesse Frost's seasonally-inspired menu.
    2. Sheerwater has casual California coastal cuisine. It is an oceanfront restaurant with lots of outdoor dining terraces and giant fireplaces.
    3. Babcock & Story Bakery and Bar offers tapas and light fare. It also serves gourmet coffee, tea, and freshly baked breads and pastries.
4.Crown-Coronet Room is world famous because of its crown-shaped chandeliers which drop from a glowing sugar-pine ceiling. Marvelous views of California can be seen from the large windows that circle the room. This is where the Sunday Brunch is served

Of course, there is also a Cabana Bar, a Poolside Bar and Deli, a Sun Deck Bar and Grill, and Room Service.

The employees see to every detail, and you are treated as though you were royalty.

It's a once in a lifetime kind of experience.

Besides wonderful places to eat, endless white sand beaches (named one of top ten beaches in USA), and incredibly beautiful scenery, the Hotel del Coronodo has two swimming pools, a nearby boathouse, and programs especially for teenagers.

We stayed one week in Southern California along the Coastal Highway. We stayed at the Capistrano Surfside Inn as a Time Share. Our one bedroom condo was at the back on the second floor, and our balcony literally brushed up against the cliffside. The balcony has a barbecue grill on it

Across the street from our condo was the Pacific Ocean, which you could reach by crossing an overpass bridge.

The Condo was really beautiful and quite large. There was a large living room and dining area, and nice-sized kitchen, a big, lovely bathroom with a private Jacuzzi tub, and a huge bedroom.

Capistrano Surfside Inn is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego, all within an hour's drive. There was an Exercise gym, an outdoor pool, cable TV, wake-up Service, and a Sauna.

It is close to Dana Point Harbor, Laguna Beach, Windsurfing, a golf course,Marina, boat rental, and a shopping mall. There is a public lounge with a big screen TV and pool table.

    Where We Stayed

For three months in Palm Springs, we rented a townhouse. It had two bedrooms and two baths, a large living room, small dining room, small kitchen, two patios, two parking spaces.

The bedrooms were quite large and furnished beautifully. Because we were there for three months, we had cable put in so we could watch WGN Chicago and watch the nine o'clock news each night to keep up with what was going on back home in Chicago!

The location of the townhouse was excellent. We could walk to the library, two different grocery stores, and shopping centers. We could walk to downtown Palm Springs, but it was quite a hike. Right outside was a dramatic view of the mountains.

I used the outdoor pool each day, which was quiet and never crowded. They also had a hot tub, but I did not use it. The grounds of this small development were kept immactulate and was landscaped very nicely.

All in all, it was an excellent place for us to stay for the three months in Palm Springs.

If you take the number of days we were there and divided it by the price we paid, it came out to about $25.00 per day. Now, you can't beat that!

In the center of downtown Palm Springs, you will find a wonderful resort, Spa Resort Casino. The hotel has 230 luxurious guest rooms and suites that are large and well appointed. The service is outstanding. The hotel boasts a "World-class Spa" voted 'Best in the Valley' seven years in a row."

In addition, there are two fine eating establishments, Agua Bar & Grill and The Steakhouse at The Spa. Both are highly regarded and always busy.

Many people come to the Spa to gamble at the 24-hour casino with over 1,000 of the best Vegas-style slots and gaming tables.

The best thing about the Spa Resort Casino is the location. You can walk to all the shops, the wonderful restaurants, the movie theatre, the Palm Springs Follies, Coffee Shops, the Deli, and any other facility you can think of.

In addition, the Spa is outstanding and reasonably priced. It is famous for "Taking of the Waters" in a sunken tub with Aqua Coolant hot mineral spring water before relaxing in the Tranquility Room. Then you have your treatment such as massages, aromatherapy, relexology, facials, etc.

I also enjoyed the Casino because of all the "low-priced" slots. It's a fun place to gamble and have fun "people watching".

The second time we visited the Palm Springs area, we stayed for a week at the Time Share Community called Lawrence Welks Desert Oasis near Cathedral City, California.

We stayed in a lovely one bedroom condo on the second floor. There was a large living room and dining area, a small, but well equipped kitchen, a large bedroom with excellent bathroom, and a balacony.

We figured out that if we divided the number of days we stayed into the price, it came to about $50.00 per day.

What we really liked was the central location only minutes away from fabulous shopping and dining.

This condo area has two beautiful swimming pools, a spa, a fitness room, an activity center, hot tub, and a snack bar. Adjacent to the resort are 27 holes of championship golf and ten lighted tennis courts.

    RENOIR HOTEL: SAN FRANCISCO GEM
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The RENOIR HOTEL is located right in the heart of downtown San Francisco. It is close to major stores, like Macy's, close to restaurants and take-out food, and a short walking distance to the start of the Cable Cars on Powell Street.
Hans and I stayed here for two nights, Thursday August 5 and Friday August 6.

Although our room was small as we reserved an economy room, it was sufficient for us. The hotel lobby had a lounge area where you can read or just watch the hustle bustle of a busy hotel. The front desk was friendly and always helpful. A busboy is available if you need your suitcases brought up to your room.

HILTON GARDEN INN: A FABULOUS HOTEL NEAR LAX AIRPORT
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 30, 31 and August 1) Hans and I stayed at the HILTON GARDEN INN.It was chosen by the VT staff because of its excellent location. It was close to the airport, a short distance to Manhattan Beach and the Hilton provided free shuttle service.
It had an awesome lobby area where we often met and gathered for our outings.

The hotel had a nice size swimming pool and patio area. There also was the computer room with free access (very important for VT'ers).

There are a lot of reasonably priced motels here as it's a casino town.

JOLLY ROGER HOTEL: CONVENIENT LOCATION IN MARINA DEL REY
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Monday, August 2, after spending the afternoon touring the VT headquarters, we didn't stray too far from the area and decided to stay in Marina del Rey at the JOLLY ROGER HOTEL It was conveniently located near Santa Monica, as we wanted to do an evening stroll on the Pier and perhaps catch the sunset, which we did.

A nice thing about the Jolly Roger, is that they provided a continental breakfast in the cozy breakfast room. We had the standard bagels, donuts, hot & cold cereal, along with juice, coffee or tea.
