In SOLVANG, we stayed at the quaint and centrally located Danish-style ROYAL SCANDINAVIAN INN right in the village square.

The rooms here are HUGE! And the heated pool (yes, even in summer) faces the lovely Santa Ynez Valley. I could only gasp in amazement at the scenic beauty of this whole place. Spellbinding.

Stayed at this fabulous hotel for a week of convention with luxuirous and excellent amenities.

Balcony overlooked into the distance snow capped mountains, spartan desert, the rolling green golf course with palm trees and large outdoor swimming pools with heat jacuzzis.

Highly recommended if budget is taken of.

Stayed several months in this inn on business.

Central located in the Silicon Valley, near Mountain View, Santa Clara and Cupertino.

Close to El Camino and all highways going to San Francisco, Milpitas and San Jose.

Several man made ponds with double storey chalets to give a countryside like environment and with plenty of ducks.

We stayed at the Motel 6 in Porterville. It wasn't fancy but it was clean, comfortable, and very reasonably priced.
1987-88 prices would not apply now but I would imagine that they will stil lbe cheaper than most. Then it was about $25 a night

Maid service was great and the staff were extremely friendly

If are travelling with a rent car provide yourself with “Motel 6, Travelodge and Motel super 8” books (you can bring it free in the first motel of each company you’ll visit). In this way you can know where you can find a town or city near your point of interest, with rooms for the night and how much it costs (in the same town you’ll find others motel and can ask for their prices).
During my travel I had a problem to find a room only on Saturday night so I advice you to reserve the day before in this occasion.
If you’ll go to Motel super 8 tell them that you are travelling with a rent car in many case you’ll have a reduction on the full price as the AAA members (~10% off).

stayed at this lovely little hotel on Nob Hill. The upper floors overlook the skyline and is within walking distance of Union Square and China Town. For some reason I was upgraded to a suite and it was devine. It was a very unusual place – more like a serviced apartment block I guess.
    .
To ring my neighbour in the next room, I had to ring out like an outside number which took me directly back to their room. No switchboard. The guys that manned reception where older and very much the big brother sort (in the nicest possible way). Being a female on my own, they made sure I was given any warnings - like walking down to Union Square at night - which I promptly ignored and did it anyway, but with care. The first thing I did was buy a sweatshirt - it was colder than I expected.
    .

The rooms are full renovated and have fully equipped kitchens (in a cupboard-like arrangement) including full size refrigerators, stove/oven combination, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, cooking utensils and complete table service for four. I didn't need all that but it was great for a longer stay.

The Old Ambassador Hotel: LOS ANGELES

Somehow on my first visit to Los Angeles I got a really good deal at this hotel. I was astounded by the size of the well manicured grounds. The lobby was so grand looking.

The hotel was originally opened in 1921 and was an important part of Los Angeles culture. It cost $5million to build which at the time was an inconvievable amount. It however closed in 1989 so I never got the chance to stay here on my subsequent visits. The hotel though, is still there.
    .
There is so much history to the hotel. The famous Coconut Grove was the mecca for movie stars and has been the site for many vintage movie featuring great stars like, Rudolf Valentino, Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, to name but a few.

Sadly it was also the site where in the pantry of the hotel, Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968. Now owned by Donald Trump, the Ambassador has become the popular sites for on-location filming including Forest Gump, Beverley Hills 90210, Murder She Wrote and many others. There have been plans to tear down the hotel, but nothing definite as to what will stand in its place.
