The Sonoma Hotel: On the Square in Sonoma
by DueSer
Trying to find a hotel in California's wine country is a real challenge because there are so many to choose from. I finally went with The Sonoma Hotel for a few reasons. The main one is that it's an historic hotel, dating from 1872. I love that. The rooms reflect that history with antique furnishings, even hiding the tv in a nice wood hutch. Another reason I chose this is that it's right on the town square. Once I parked my car, I didn't need to move it until I was ready to leave town. All the shops, historic sites, and restaurants are within walking distance. The price is definitely right, as well. There are a lot of very expensive (one might even say ridiculously expensive) hotels in this neck of the woods. If you want to experience the Sonoma region without breaking the bank, this is a terrific option.
If you want a spa-type retreat this isn't a good choice but if you want a relaxing place that truly exudes the Sonoma atmosphere, you can't beat this place, in my opinion.
In the upstairs hallway, there are old photos of the hotel as well as mementos from its past, including programs from concerts that were put on here.
The rooms have quilts on the bed and claw foot bathtubs in the bathrooms. Great bathing salts are provided too - a great way to relax after a long day!
The lobby connects through a pretty glass door to a restaurant if you don't want to go far for dinner. A simple breakfast is provided in the lobby.
Everyone who works in the hotel is so darn nice!
Poet Maya Angelou stayed here and even wrote one of her poems in the hotel.
