Camping on the beach
by ehren_ben
I've read about the RV camping site at Huntington Beach. Is it a pleasant place or do you get the feeling that you camp in the parking site of a mall?
Can anyone recommend a camping site in the greater Los Angeles area, that is within walking distance from the sea?
Thanks,
Benny

I really don't know much about RV campgrounds in general, but depending on the time of year you plan to be there, - I do know that campgrounds on the California coast fill up quick, many are booke full months ahead.

Asphalt jungle. The best beach campgrounds within a short distance is 28 miles north of Santa Monica on PCH (Hwy 1) at Leo Carillo State Beach. See websites: http://leocarrillo.com/

Agree Larry, and it is one of the nicest ones. It is however one of those that get booked full way ahead. But it is a nice one indeed.
Travel Tips for Huntington Beach
HB is for dogs too!
by Scandic
Dog Beach, located on Pacific Coast Highway between 21st Street and Seapoint Street, offers a stretch of beach where your pet is free to roam without a leash. Open from 5am – 10pm, you can frolic in the surf with your canine pal and work on your tan at the same time. Parking meters charge $1.50 per hour. Huntington Central Park is home to Dog Park, just off Edwards Street on Inlet Drive near Lake Huntington. Dog Park has separate fenced sections for small and large dogs, with amenities including benches, tables and water. It is open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on weekends. Parking and entry are free but donations are welcome.
The best part of Huntington...
by ButterflyA
The best part of Huntington Beach is of course the beach area. There are great surf shops like Huntington Surf and Sport, lavish hotels and if you walk out to the end of the pier there's a great fifty's style diner (can't remember the name)overlooking the water. The state beach actually has bonfire pits that can be used until around 10 or 11 at night. This is a must. There aren't many beaches where it's still legal to have a bonfire!!!!! My fondest memory is probably going to the park in the center of town with my aunt as a child. There are geese and gymnasiums and some of the most beautiful flowers you've ever seen.
Get Food, Shop and Buy Art at Farmer's Market
by marinarena
HB has their twist on the common farmer's market. Farmer's Market and Art A-Faire occurs each Friday at Pier Plaza, 315 Pacific Coast Highway.
Having a farmer's market near the beach is always convenient. It starts at PCH/Main st. This is a great way to have a picnic at the beach. Get the picnic basket for collecting exotic fruits, veggies and gourmet snacks.
Along with the food, there are vendor booths with fresh sunflowers, glassware, craft items, purses and much more.
Art-A-Faire features vibrant original frames of California skyline, hand-made sculpture and various trinkets of artistic quality.
Parking is at 1st street where there is a lot.
Dress Casually
by Scandic
At HB you can enter almost anywhere in your bikinis. Casual, comfortable clothing is fine all year round. In fact, Hawaiian shirts always look good—and right at home—in Huntington Beach. Jackets and ties are optional even in the most elegant of restaurants. During evenings and winter days when the ocean breezes turn cool, you’ll want a jacket, sweater or sweatshirt. Dress in layers so you can remove clothing as the day warms up and replace it as the day cools off, particularly if you plan to stay on the beach.
Surfing is a must!
by Scandic
HB is home to more than a half dozen surfing championships each year including the biggest surfing event in the world, the U.S. Open of Surfing.
So this place basically 'lives' from surfing. Surfers from all around gather here around the year and a regular visitor might get the spark for that board life right here at HB.
There are many courses and rental shops, all you need to do is ask for an instructor and there you go. Catch the next wave babe! Most surfing instructors and camps offer various levels of longboard and shortboard instruction for beginning and experienced surfers alike. Lessons and equipments are available from these local firms:
Huntington Beach Surfing Instruction, 714-962-3515
Huntington Surf & Sport, 714-841-4000
