BrendaLehr's new Indian Wells Page
Consisting of world class golf courses, luxury resorts, 350 days of sunshine a year and located only seventeen miles from Palm Springs, Indian Wells is a fabulously wealthy desert community whose residents enjoy the the 2nd highest income per capita in the State of California. Ironically, Indian Wells began as an Indian village that revolved around a hand-built well! The first Anglo settlers didn't start arriving until 1906. In 1917, Caleb E. Cook became a pioneer of the date industry, establishing the first large Deglet Noor date garden. By 1922, Indian Wells had a post office, school, general store and successful date ranches becoming one of the most quickly developed sections of the Coachella Valley. Construction began in late 1955 on the golf course at Indian Wells Country Club. Members included Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Ruby Keeler, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, George Gobel, Lawrence Welk and Arnold Palmer, winner of an unequalled five Bob Hope Classic tournaments. In 1957, Desi Arnaz began construction on the Indian Wells Hotel (now the Indian Wells Resort Hotel), located on what became the 11th and 12th fairways of the Indian Wells Country Club golf course. The same year, construction began on Eldorado Country Club, the desert's fourth 18-hole golf course and country club. The City of Indian Wells incorporated on July 14, 1967.
