Nice but lacking in some areas for the price we paid...
by A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel La Jolla during the weekend of March 11. Overall, this was a very nice hotel and coveniently located to downtown La Jolla and the freeways. Our suite was cheerful and roomy, and the maid and other staff service were friendly and hardworking. I would have rated our stay higher but for the following: (1) The hotel promotes in-room massages (through a outside party) - when we checked in I called the number to inquire about making an appointment for a massage and was told I would receive a return call to set up a time. They never called back. (2) In lieu of a massage, I thought I would try the jacuzzi instead, only to find it closed for repairs. I was disappointed but it didn't kill our weekend. I would probably stay here again if the price were discounted.
Rude Rude Rude Staff!

I booked a night's stay at Hotel La Jolla and subsequently had to cancel online. My next credit card statement had a charge for the hotel. I called the reservations desk and they told me that I needed a cancellation #. I asked if they send cancellation e-mails and she said no, so I told her I did not have a cancellation #. I left a message with the manager. I went through all my e-mails received for April and found a cancellation e-mail. I called the desk back and told her she was wrong and found the e-mail. Without saying anything, she transferred me to someone else who never picked up. The manager that I left my urgent message with didn't call back, so I called him back. He told me their system was down and couldn't access anything and would call back the next day. Of course he didn't, so I called back and left 2 more urgent messages, including one with the hotel staff. The following day, I hadn't heard from anyone, so I called several more times and spoke with another manager who was quite short with me and made up many excuses as to why it hadn't been taken care of. He told me to e-mail the controller, which I did, and didn't get a response from. My furious fiance called the following day and got himself chewed out by the manager that was rude to me. I e-mailed the controller again to ask for a response and FINALLY got one. Moral of the story is, if the staff/managers don't have their act together, you certainly don't want chance a vacation stay with them.
Customer No-service

Having stayed at this hotel several years ago, I chose it again. $250 a night for a two-night stay. Never again. I'll pay for La Valencia, La Jolla's finest. Hotel La Jolla was as noisy as any drive up, park in front of your room motel. I had stayed on the 8th floor before, and with 3 kids I hadn't noticed the noise. This time we were placed in a "garden view" room on the 3rd floor. "Garden" meaning a 3-story tree in the parking lot. A car's alarm went off every 9 minutes, at 3 am for 1 1/2 hours. The night auditor/manager on duty told me that, "Gosh, I can't hear it." I suggested having their security guard check it out. She told me that it wouldn't do any good cause he wouldn't know whose car it was. I thought that's why they asked us for our license plate number and make and model of car upon check-in.
The smoke detector was literally hanging from the wall upon entering the room. My husband checked it and it was wired and probably functioning. This hotel has had recent problems with their detectors going off inthe middle of the night, for no reason. They thought it was some wiring problem and thought it was fixed, just forgot to place it back on the wall. Anyway, stay at the La Valencia, if you can afford it!
La Jolla Shores

One of the nice, known to locals beach is La Jolla Shores.
Of course now that the word got out, the parking is tougher, but still possible to find.
You can lay out, read a book, job, set up volleyball court, etc.
There are a few nice little places to eat too.

I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. The room was very clean and very well maintained every day of my stay. Only compaint is that the shutters in my room didn't stay open which darkened the room and obstructed the view of the ocean. All rooms face west (towards the ocean) with the hotel having "oustide cooridors" on the back side (east) of the hotel. There are 10 floors of guestrooms and the 11th floor is the restaurant. Both elevators worked fine during my stay. The lower floors are obstructed by other buildings, houses, and trees, etc. The ocean view rooms are on the higher floors and the "garden view" rooms on the lower floors. A co-worker was on the 4th floor in a "garden view" room and said it was still nice and they could see part of the ocean at their level. The hotel had ample free self parking. There is a gas station right next to the hotel along with a Starbucks and Subway. Hotel is very conveniently located for those staying in La Jolla. The beach is nearby and can be reached on foot (semi-long walk) or via the free shuttle. Staff was friendly. The intersection next to the hotel (Torrey Pines and La Jolla Shores Drive) is a very busy intersection and noisy (as previously reported). The lower your the series of your room number, the closer you are to the intersection. (Ie. Room 501A is the closest to the noise, and 510B is furthest away from the busy intersection.) Reserved the Deluxe Ocean View King. My room series was "08" and I could not hear the traffic from that location on the 8th floor. Beds were very comfortable. Had nice view of the ocean. Paid $169/night which I thought was kinda high, but for La Jolla, it's not bad. The lobby very small, but they do offer apples in the morning and evening wine as previously reported.
Get a quiet room
by TripAdvisor Member USATraveller
We got a managers special deal for $99 per night, which was great but that did mean we got a room that was close to the to the intersection. Iam not sure any of the rooms are going to be quiet. If traffic noise is something that worries you then I would not recommend this hotel- but what do you expect in La Jolla for $99?
View from the restaurant is superb.
In our two week stay in the USA I would have to say the staff seemed the least bothered about being friendly. The people on reception were friendly enough but not welcoming and it would have been nice if they had chatted a little, told us about the area like many of the other places we stayed.
Great place to stay

While La Jolla has so many places to offer, this one is definately worth trying. It really not walking distance to the Village, but the Hotel offers free shuttle service (Village is about 1-2 miles away). The hotel is very clean, lobby is nice and every one was very helpful. Our room was larger than average, we did not pay for the beach view, but recieved a beach view room with a balcony (all rooms have balconies). The room is nicely decorated, bathrobes provided, coffee maker, regular amenities, a decent size gym and a heated pool/jaccuzzi. I would stay here again. The restaurant on the 11th floor (Estancia sp?) is wonderful, great food, service, view and you don't have to drive into the Village to find a parking spot! The road noise didn't bother us, we were on the 4th floor. The hotel parking is free and a Starbucks right next door!
Great Little Hotel with a View

Me and my friend stayed here for one night and we enjoyed it. We got and Ocean View room. The room was very clean and well kept. Very spacious for two people. Bed was very comfy. The Village shops was just down the street which was very convenient. If your going to stay at this hotel, just make sure your facing the ocean.
Our Wonderful Stay at, La Jolla at the Shores
by A TripAdvisor Member
Our family stayed at, La Jolla at the Shores, last August. It was wonderful, we rented a full suite, which contained a full kitchen with all the pots pans and dishes. A regular sized frigerator, stove and microwave. It also had large, large cabnet space for all of our luggage and beach accessories. Since the kitchen was so big, we just went out and bought all of our dinners and never had to go out to a restruarant. The kitchen was big enough to cook any size meal. It even had a coffee pot and ice maker in the refigerator. The bathroom had a stand up shower and a regular size bathtub. The room extended into a living room that had a big glass sliding door that had a balcony over the beach. It was a beautiful view. We had five people and the room gave us plenty of space. The employees were at our service whenever we needed them. In the morning they had a complementary breakfast which served begals, donuts, cereals, and all sorts of juices. They also gave complementary newspapers. The only drawback was that the pool was off the second floor which has alot of stairs to climb, and we had a disabled person in our group which had an extremly hard time climing to the pool. They had no wheelchair access to the pool at all. The cove was obvious not a place for people who need to use a wheelchair. Because they had no ramps for wheelchairs to the cove at all. So for thoes who are requiring a wheelchair and would like a hotel that they can swim, this hotel is not for you. But other than that we had a wonderful time and will be coming back to this hotel.
