Oasis in the Desert

Big rooms, lots of pools, a 'communal' feel as the previous tip mentions. The best part about our room was the large patio, and the tangerine trees within arm's reach. Quite a feeling to wake up in the morning, walk outside into the open desert air and pluck your breakfast from a tree. Of course they have on-site restaurants too if you're into cooked food :)

Twenty6 has great breakfast food. Azur is the high-end high-priced offering, but it is a good experience for those who like blowing money on really really good food.

My wife and I used the Spa and loved it. Staff overall was friendly and very helpful.

One gripe - apparently a lack of tips has compelled the resort to start charging 'maid service' fees of $3.00/night on your bill. I was especially irked by this because we did not have any maid service during our stay, so we paid for nothing. It would have been less of an issue if they'd have just raised the room rates 3 bucks instead.

Unique Quality: Lots of pools
Large, open patios

Self-contained little village.

This feels more like a community than a hotel. I stayed at the standard units. The rooms are in clusters, and each cluster is oriented usually around a pool. So, socially very good. The rooms are decorated like homes more than hotels. Fireplace in each, wooden blinds, actual curtains, wood furniture, mini-bar, separate shower/euro size tub, etc. Good "home away from home" feel. A bit "feminine" in decor, but it's better then the drab hotels you usually get. Busy during day with maids, maintenance, etc... driving around on golf carts. Lots of people just tanning at pool and mingling.

Unique Quality: Full service Spa. Full service Tennis facility with hard, clay and grass courts! Two resort/championship golf courses - but have to drive through private neighborhoods to get there - or you can walk. And you get tee times at PGA West a few minutes away by car also! Built right under the Santa Rosa mountains! Shops in resort - just outside, there is a full mini-mall with grocery store within easy reach of resort. Parking is a bit tough to find. People in the resort are a mix of all types of people - families - but not too many kids, singles, couples, from all walks of life... the neighborhoods around the resort are a bit "snooty" - people with money - some look down their nose at the tourists visiting.

Worth the price... maybe

by kailam about Azur

A top-tier restaurant on the grounds of La Quinta Resort. My wife and I ate here in December of 2006. Expect very good food and expect to pay a lot for it. But ask if there are any large parties in advance!

The service is what you would expect, friendly and attentive, but I thought a little pompous as well. The real attraction here is the food. The salmon dish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The deserts were tiny pieces of heaven, probably more worth the price tag than the entrees themselves.

The one mistake we made was coming here expecting a quiet romantic setting. The first hour of the meal was great, but then a company party was moved from the bar into the (apparently only) dining room, literally right behind us. The ensuing ruckus of tipsy mingling coworkers killed the mood pretty fast.

Golf your Brains out!

Interesting but not super difficult golf courses all over! 5 to choose from with La Quinta Resort: 3 PGA West courses, and 2 La Quinta courses. I played both LQ and PGA West Norman in a 3 day weekend. Had the course to myself for 2! Pete Dye and other famous architects responsible for these courses. Nearby, MANY MANY other options - reasonable Indian Springs, popular Indian Wells, Trilogy, Landmark, etc... etc... Fun, challenging, relaxing. And if you can't afford full price golf here - and don't mind the heat - play special rates everywhere with mid afternoon tee time! I'm talking less than 1/2 price! Weekday specials everywhere too! Of these 5, I've played 4 of them now. Order of favorites: TPC Stadium, LQ Mountain, Norman, LQ Dunes. Bring your own - why rent clubs? (but they rent if you need them). Bring sunscreen! You're in a cart a lot, but the sun is intense. Bring a good hat - I like visors or full rim hats with plenty of ventillation. No caps here - too stuffy. Sun glasses help too - but don't get them too dark if you're playing Mountina (a few holes in shade of mountain).

gorgeous grounds, but........

by TripAdvisor Member travelwriterwannab

La Quinta Resort. Where to start. Been staying at this resort for 10 years.
There are some improvements and some areas that have seriously gone downhill.

HIghlights:

1) The grounds are beautiful.
2) The spa!
3) Warm starlite nights.
4) Best gazpacho anywhere.

Low points:

1) front desk staff and reservations
2) most rooms are in disrepair - be careful
3) housekeeping and room service interruptions despite the do not disturb sign!
4) lousy room service meals.

Now the real scoop.

The spa was a much needed addition to this resort. Although I have had a couple of negative experiences with spa staff, in general it is a sanctuary by comparison to some of the other "cattle call" spas in the desert.

The Epicurean Facial and the Crushed Grape Seed body scrub with Vichy showers are amazing. Massages by Diana. Book ahead.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The fragant citrus blossoms, the mountain back drop and gorgeous stars at night are something you just don't have at other resorts.

The addition of the new spa villas was much needed and if you can afford it, stay in that section of the resort.

The gazpacho is fabulous at this resort and I try to have it each time I am there. Its a must try.

At La Quinta Resort, it feels secluded (eventhough it really isn't anymore)....10 years ago, there were only three restaurants in the entire area and no grocery store, now there are dozens and some of the best dining in the desert.

You can walk in your robe for hours at night and rarely see another person...even skinny dip in one of the 40 plus pools scattered around the property.

The resort casitas are substandard at best...they overcharge for these rooms. I would not even sit on the bed coverlet or in a chair in one of these rooms....and I would not walk barefoot on the carpet either. They've got to be worse than a Motel 6!

These rooms during season will run you at least $400 /night.....

There are rooms that are nicer than others at this resort by far. They will most likely be "older" though. This is an older property with lots of history, which does carry some charm, but I would ask for a Starlight Casita or a spa casita (and there are only a few of them).

Many rooms have malfuntioning cooling, windows that are painted shut, toilets that run all night, carpet that needs replacing.

If you book thru expedia (which has great deals on rooms), you MUST bring your confirmation with you. Otherwise it is a bait and switch set up when you check in.

The front desk manager is no help. One would think that they are switching you to a lower category room, telling you that expedia booked it improperly, just so they can sell your room to someone else for more money.

The general manager of the property, will help though. At the start of this kind of problem, pick up a house phone and ask for him immediately. It will save you hours of hassles and frustration with the front desk staff.

Housekeeping over the years has been horrible. They claim they can't read english --- as in they don't understand the do not disturb sign on your door. Funny, as it only says do not disturb....on both sides....what don't they get?

Room service is notorious for coming by late in the evening or early in the morning and ringing the door bell to pick up the room service tray from a meal hours earlier...and always at the most inopportune times, if you know what I mean!

Room service has been really bad the last few times we've stayed at the resort. Think about how awful a cobb salad is that is warm and limp and drenched in dressing---almost soup consistency. Egg dishes that are cold for breakfast, etc. And ofcourse, pricey!

I would suggest booking on line thru expedia to get the best room rate and the best category you can afford. Print out the confirmation and take it with you. I would further suggest you calling the day before arrival and confirming with the general manager's office that you are getting what you have requested and paid for in advance.

If you can't get thru to his office get names...lots of names, everyone you talk to, get their name and write it on your confirmation. That way if you have an issue, you can let Mr. Kriske know specifically who is responsible.

Eating in the area ---- avoid the resort restaurants...overpriced and not that great. Although the margaritas at the mexican restaurant are great.

Try Sandbar Cunard's, Las Casuelas La Quinta, Arnold Palmer's....all very very close to the resort.

nothing special

by A TripAdvisor Member

Nothing special- more like a 3 star hotel. The resort is quite old and the rooms are showing their age. Feels more like living in apartments than a resort. Everything was mediocre- nothing felt extraordinary. Nothing about this place impressed me- next time I will opt for something else. Absolutely not worth the money.

A Mexican Style Resort for Active Adults

by TripAdvisor Member Adams

We loved it. The resort grounds are spectacular and though its large you have a great deal of privacy. The location of the rooms vary tremendously- ranging from an LA style garden apartment complex to luxury villa. I spent hours just walking the grounds. The mountains in the background and orange tree blossoms were heaven. The best locations are near the lobby, restaurants and fitness center. The fitness center is state of the art and the yoga and exercise classes ( for a fee) were great. We usually stay in Palm Springs so I was hesitant about the remote location. There were enough great restaurants 5 minutes from the resort to keep us happy. My only complaint was the 16 $ added resort fee per day and the lack of knowledge about the area of the front desk and concierege. I would also not reccomend it for families, it seems to appeal to active middle agers ( 40's and 50's) who like to keep active and corporate types. Beware though when they say "poolside" it doesn't mean walk out your door and the pool is there. We asked to change rooms and they did accomodate. We loved it for a few days and would return again.

Wonderful

by TripAdvisor Member JBush

We have just returned from five wonderful days at La Quinta.
Our casita, overlooking a pool and hot tub, with the mountains in the background, was perfect. The grounds of the resort, flowers, citrus trees and cacti, were nothing short of spectacular. The golf at the Dunes, Mountain, Nicklaus, Norman and Stadium courses was lots of fun.
Everything at the resort was first class. We hope to return.

Did not live up to my expectations either

by TripAdvisor Member catmom37

We stayed at La Quinta April 3-4, and for the most part enjoyed ourselves and the facilities. I agree with the previous reviewer in that this resort should not be considered 4 or 5 star, although it may have been in its heyday. While the landscaping is beautiful, the rooms definitely need updating, as well as the spa. We found it odd that the closet was in the bathroom, and it seemed there was a lot of wasted space. The shower/bathtub combo was average size, but perhaps there are other rooms with larger ones. The beds are comfortable, though, with nice linens and soft pillows. The mini bar was well-stocked, but of course extremely overpriced. Overall, the spa was nice, but the steam room was small, and there's only one outdoor whirlpool, which had lots of leaves and bugs in it, as it was quite windy during our stay. The vichy shower rooms could use new showerheads and tables. I think the best part about the spa was the co-ed outdoor relaxation area, although the outdoor bathtubs and showers looked nice, too. Treatments were good, and most of the staff provided good service (although the receptionist took an unusually long time trying to calculate 15% gratuity). My main complaint is that upon check-out, the hotel bill was missing our room service charge, which I pointed out to the desk clerk. He told me not to worry about it, and I assumed I wouldn't be charged. Lo and behold, the charge showed up on my credit card 2 days later, which put me over my credit limit and resulted in an over limit fee. Regardless of how hotel management handles this situation now, it should never have happened at a supposedly top-notch resort. Buyer beware! I have definitely stayed in nicer hotel rooms for $200/night.

Excellent stay

by TripAdvisor Member yanna

We stayed over a weekend in Early April. The service was great. The bellhop even volunteered to go back and get a receipt, as we had checked out via the TV. The Casita had a whirpool which I used twice. The private walled patio and the ice maker in the mini bar were unexpected. I think the food at lunch and at the Adobe was very average, but there are other places to dine.

World Cup Football / Soccer finals on TV in California / Vegas?

by Mike57

Hi

We're travelling to La Quinta [Palm Springs] and Vegas during the World Cup finals this July.

Any ideas on whether it will be on TV / Cable - and where I might see games?

The final will be held while we're in Vegas at the MGM Grand - likely to be on cable or on show somewhere?

These things are important to us in England!

Many thanks for any help

Mike

Hi Mike,

You will be able to see all of the matches here in the states if your accommodations have access to the cable TV station ESPN (and it's subsidiaries). And yes, the World Cup is also important to us folks in the Colonies :-)
