Travel Tips for Lancaster
Take Me Out to the Ball Park;-)
Jethawks a minor league baseball club is a really unique sports activity Lancaster has going for its self. The have their own baseball team, which to some that live the big cities probably think, so what! Yet, around here we care and think it is a pretty cool thing to have and Lancaster takes alot of pride in it too! The gift shop and ticket sales is usually open all the time. Just give them a call first. It does get windy here at times so be prepared for that. Just because it is the desert, it does get freezing cold. So bundle up for during the winter months from Oct-Mar. During the summer months April -Sept, oh boy, it gets hot here from anywhere from 90 to 105 degrees, so dress accordingly.
EARTHQUAKE CENTER IS FOR THE DEVIL'S PUNCHBOWL
Punchbowl Fault to the South, Pinyon Fault and San Andreas Fault to the North and in the center of these earthquake faults is the Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area. What a way to describe this earthquake zone, the Devil, you say. Oh yeah, and it's face is emblazoned upon the rock formation. Still, it is a great area for hiking and getting a view of what happens when Mother Nature gets angry. The rock formations are proof enough.
Of course the beauty of the area also shines in the drive through the Antelope Valley desert floor and up through Joshua Trees and California Junipers to the Pinyon, Cottonwoods and Pines at the 4,700 foot elevation of Devil's Punchbowl. Many types of shrubs, cacti, and bushes dot the landscape. There are several trails to take to enjoy this high desert area. Just make sure to bring along bottled water to this part of the desert. The air can dry out your throat and the water will be very handy to have.
ANTELOPE VALLEY CALIFORNIA POPPY RESERVE
15 miles north of Lancaster, CA in the high desert are rolling hills that in the spring, burst forth with a golden hue brought about by the rains of winter. The view is of the California Poppy. You can visit this area from March to May and now they have a newly built poppy center for information and gift shop on site.
Many walking trails, over seven miles) are within the reserve, that allow you to see the many varieties of desert wildflowers with the California State Flower, the golden poppy taking center stage. See my California Poppy Reserve travelogue with more pictures of the reserve.
CALIFORNIA STATE FLOWER
Every state in the United States has a state flower. California had many flowers to choose among, but only one said California so clearly. The California State Flower, the golden poppy, with the botanical name given to it , Eschscholtzia Californica, by Adelbert Von Chamisso, a naturalist, in 1816. It became the state flower in 1903, and April 6th is California Poppy Day. Lancaster has one of the most prolific golden poppy fields in the State.
Black Moon Rising Movie Back Drop and more:-)
This is a pretty cool building, which by the way was an actual working community market till about 2 years ago. Ever since I can remember it has been the backdrop for so many commmericals and movies. It has had its appearance changed so many times so this is what it looks like now. Pretty cool to see. Every time we pass through here, they signs change...lol. Black Moon Rising with Tommy Lee and Linda Hamilton was filmed some here and many more different commericals.
Located on the corner of Ave E and 90 St. East. You can exit either way off of Highway 14 to see it.
