Travel Tips for Lancaster

Enjoy the "Hottest Ball Game" in town

by ATXtraveler

The Lancaster Jethawks started out in town around the time I was leaving for college.. but I did love to come back to my hometown and enjoy an evening out at the old BallPark (even if it is a new ballpark).

The Jethawks play from April through September, so head out and catch a game!

Lancaster County Cedar Center

by Yaqui

Home of the local Cedar Performing Arts Academy, this building has been a permanent fixture for the Lancaster Community since 1938. It consist of 5 buildings, which are the County Memorial Hall/Courthouse/Library, Sheriff Substation, Health Center Office, Jail, and Sheriff Garage. The previous County Memorial Hall/Courthouse/Library that had been built in 1923 burned down. So a much larger building was constructed for continuing service to the community. This was the main center of social activities for 1938 to the 1950. Yet, as a kid I can still remember the many local dances and meetings that have taken place here. They still rented out this building for local activities. What is so neat about the building is the Art Deco Modern architecture outside and inside that is so charming. Listed on the Register of Historical Places for Los Angeles County - #93001017

Located on Lancaster Blvd and 44851 Cedar Avenue.

Franklin Building 1922

by Yaqui

Here is another historical building named for Lancaster pioneer Benjamin Franklin Carter that was commissioned by his daughter Bertha Cameron. It's original purpose was to house Estelle's Cottage Grocery on one side and on the other the local Antelope Valley Ledger Gazette and two apartment upstairs. Since 1922 it has been occupied since then with some sort of business. Now it has this Thai Restaurant. I can remember when it had a restaurant that specialized in Hot Dogs for many many years. The structure to the left of the building was added in 1948 to the expanding AV Ledger Gazette till the paper had to move in 1953. I use to admire it when I walked by it when I walked to school.

Located on 44753-44759 Sierra Highway right across from street of the Metro Link Station

Apollo County Park

by Yaqui

UPDATE - The Capsule has been moved to Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey, Ca. It has been a wonderful fixture for over 35 years. The park will so empty without it! :-(

This park is dedicated to the Apollo XI space flight July 29, 1969 and each one of the lakes is named after astronauts Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin. This park area uses renovated waste water for recreational purposes.

Located at Northbound California 14/Antelope Valley Freeway and Westbound California 138 approaches Exit 46, 4555 Avenue G next to General William J. Fox Airport. This park is stocked every two weeks with trout. They have Annual Fishing Tournaments (Youth/Adults) that attracts many locals to the lake.

It has many open and covered picnic tables and barbeque areas. Has a very wide path for walking/biking that encompasses the whole park. Loads of wonderful ducks that make this their summer and winter home. Just beware of what they leave behind, the hazards of the area....LOL! There is also a couple of play areas for the little ones. There are many restrooms areas located at each of the lakes. It's a great place for family to spend the day!

Popular Movie & Commerical backdrop;-)

by Yaqui

This has been a very favorite backdrop for many TV commercials and movies. Some of you may recognize these. It is located out on 150th St East between Ave J and Ave M. Have you ever noticed the Joshua trees in the background of many movies when the lead character is driving away to no mans land. Can't guess where they film those huh?

A recent commercial of American Choppers was filmed at this location and the street makes a perfect backdrop of a lonely desert road into the sunset.
