    Terrific Hampton Inn

    by

We have stayed on at least two occasions in this Hampton Inn. It was so impressive on our visit with it's updated décor, cleanliness, convenience and great staff. Plus they have some great weekend rates (or at least they did on our visit). It is a good location near the Interstate but still convenient for going downtown (need a car) and touring their amazing wineries.

Travel Tips for Livermore

Retzlaff Vineyards

by Agraichen

I found Retzlaff one day while riding my bicycle in the Livermore Valley. Just off a dirt road sits a small "Mom and Pop" winery that produces some exceptional award winning wines.

They don't produce much, just enough. SO every year I make the pilgrimage to taste and purchase the "futures." Well, I may visit more often than that...but the futures tasting is a wonderful event.

No fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides are used on the vines. They make all their wines by hand (and if you show up during crush you might get put to work). Great place and great people.

The tasting room is open:
Tuesday - Friday from 12:00 - 2:00 PM Weekends from 12:00 - 4:30 PM

Bodegas Aguirre Winery

by Agraichen

Established only in 1995 this winerey specializes in estate grown premium red wines. Their care has produced some of the highest quality grapes in the valley which is turned into Pitite Syrah, Bordeaux style varietals and a few blends.

The proprietor, Dr. Ricardo E. Aguirre, MD is a retired Cardiovascular Surgeon who began making wine as a hobby. Now a few hundred cases later this small winery produces some incredible reds.

Tasting on weekends only Noon - 4:00 PM
Located at: 8580 Tesla Road Livermore

Murrieta's Well

by Agraichen

This is a small winery but it dates back to old CA. Wente bought the winery in 1990 to make a come back for "old world style" wines. It is only 92 acres but produces some very good wines due to the local soil.

Tasting: Wed - sun 11:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Location: 30005 Mines road Livermore

Eat Middle East Food in North Livermore

by AlbuqRay about Alekos

Alekos is a new restaurant in the Springtown area of Livermore. In Sep 07 it had been open for ~5 weeks. They have Greek and Mediterranean food. You order at the counter and your food will be ready quickly (5-10 minutes). There was a steady stream of people doing take out, but if you decide to eat in, the service is friendly and good. I have only been there one time. I had the vegetarian Greek Platter with falafel, hummus, baba ghanoj, fasolia gigante, dolmades, yogurt and pita bread for $9.25. The grilled vegetables looked so good that I got them also... grilled eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes for $3.50. I had namora (baked coconut and yogurt) for dessert.

If You Are Hungry on a Small Budget

by AlbuqRay about Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ

The Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ restaurant just opened in downtown Livermore. It has a good location next to the Lemon Grass Restaurant. If you don't have much money and are really hungry, go for one of their plate lunches. They are huge with plenty of meat, macaroni salad, rice and cholesterol. We thought the place might be totally authentic but our Hawaiian colleague said no; they did not have a turkey special on Thursday. They did have typical plate lunches like chicken katsu, pork lau lau, kulua pig and BBQ short ribs. Mini plate lunches (big) are around $4 and the regular (huge) size around $6. The seafood combo at $7.25 was the most expensive item. It had mahi mahi and deep fried shrimp with a choice of teriyaki steak, BBQ chicken, BBQ short ribs or katsu chicken with two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad. I did not really have a favorite. There was just too much batter for me. The chicken katsu sauce did have a good flavor. Next time I think I'll try the beef curry or the teriyaki pork chop.
