planning to travel with dogs - need advice

by loralu

Hey - I've enjoyed reading some of the Q&A regarding the area. Looking for a bit of sunshine, beach time, relax, maybe mild hiking, place for my dogs to hang, meet some *interesting* people, quiet time but also nice music (jazz or Dj house or break beat music) at night, perhaps. I'll be driving from Denver with 2 huskies sometime here late November or December. So don't want to go somewhere that's in 90's - hopefully no hotter than mid 80's. Hoping for a place that is dog-friendly and looking for a potential hostel or low-key hotel that we can stay at that's clean. I figure this is the closest, nicest area to Denver that has beach but am open for other suggestions. I also like Ultimate frisbee :)

I read about Long Beach so that doesn't sound as interesting as the other places like Venice, Santa Monica, Redondo, Hermosa, etc. Never been to this area so have no idea what to expect. Any advice is welcome!

Hi,
I don't know if you have made your trip yet, but happened upon this post, and saw that you had no replies---what a drag! I live here in Long Beach, and have dogs, so have researched this subject here as well as the neighboring beach communities while planning getaways for my husband and I along with the dogs.
Just discovered the Long Beach Coast hotel, which is right on the water, welcomes dogs, and is not too pricey. It is a cool, kick-back place, just a short distance from the Queen Mary, and the grounds are perfect for dog walking. The staff is very low-key, which we liked. They just leave you alone. We also liked the one-time fee for pets, and the fact that they don't have certain rooms designated for pets which are not as nice. If you have traveled with your dogs before, you know how it can be...
If you would like, I can also recommend other good pet friendly hotels in Palm Springs, Laguna Beach, and Pismo Beach. Some are more accomodating than others.. Feel free to get back to me, and let me know how your trip was--

Travel Tips for Long Beach

Take a stroll along Bluff...

by egtravel

Take a stroll along Bluff Park, overlooking the harbor and the Queen Mary! The most awesome time is running down on the bike path after a winter storm and the sun is just beginning to peak out, with the wind whipping about! And then of course the sunsets!

Eastside

by jenn_d

Of the 36 parks in the city El Dorado is the largest and the closest to my home. The park holds an archery range and even a frisbee-golf course..which is packed with the oddest people.

Jogging here with Ethan we stopped to feed the ducks.

Taking Pictures at Shoreline Village

by marinarena

Unfortunately in these times in America, terror alerts have been part of a new norm. There is a color coded terror alert system now which is taken somewhat seriously (much more if the level is at orange or red). A few times, the level threat has reached yellow (signifcant risk) which means that some possibly vulnerable sites take extra caution to look out for "suspicious" activity. This may include the simple pleasure of taking pictures.

In fall 2004, I happen to be at Shoreline Village taking some pictures when i was approached by a security officer. He was cordial with me but did warn that his manager may forbid me to take pictures around the property (which is by the famous Queen Mary) because at the time, the terror threat was elevated (at yellow color) and Shoreline Village is considered as a vulnerable site.

Don't be too alarmed about what I wrote but Ido just want to share something that could possibily happen on a trip here. Most of the time, Shoreline Village is a peaceful and open place where one will not be hassled.

For Jazz fans... don't forget...

For Jazz fans... don't forget to come during the Long Beach Jazz Festival. You can call me a jazz fan too... but only if it isn't the too classical type. I tend to sway towards the Jazz Fusion type of sound....

Beautiful, Hip Belmont Shore !

by marinarena

Many travelers go to the Queen Mary, the aquarium and downtown spots in L.B. There is another part of the city that seems to be left out a bit -that is Belmont Shore.

Belmont Shore is always a fun spot for unique shopping, going to galleries, people watching, chugging beers at the pubs and trying out alternative dining. Along 2nd street is where to be to mix in with the locals.

One cool way to get to this area is to take the Red Passport bus from downtown L.B. to 2nd street. The ride is just under a buck!
