2nd stay-April 2007 This was my 2nd stay at the Westin near LAX, I typically bid the 3* category but this time there was one hotel that I wanted to avoid in the 3* category so I bid 4*. Hotels near airports in large cities tend to be cheaper than hotels directly in the cities since they tend to be out of the way. Fortunately for us, that is where we need to stay when we visit. I didn't get the terrific bargain rate of $45 I did the first time on this hotel on Priceline, this time I had to bid $75 to get the Westin. A quick look at Bidding For Travel will give you an idea of how much it goes for currently. Both times they honored my room requests, once for adjoining rooms and the 2nd time for two beds even though the room was through Priceline. There is a complimentary shuttle from LAX, I think it went 2 times per hour from the hotel back to the airport, not sure about pickup from the airport. From 5-7pm they have something called "unwind" in the lobby, I'm still not entirely sure if it's complimentary or not but it looked like drinks were being served.
Overall I was satisfied with the hotel, the beds are the Heavenly Beds they advertise which are comfortable with down pillows and comforter and the shower is the Heavenly Shower which has curved shower curtains and dual shower heads. Towels were reasonably thick. Toiletries included shampoo, conditioner, lotion and bar soap. There was a hair dryer and an iron/ironing board. No refrigerator in our room, the higher priced rooms have them along with mini bars. TV with only one premium channel, I think it was Showtime. There was a nice workout facility and an outside pool with deck chairs, neither of which I had time to use. It would have still been a little chilly to use the pool. My only real complaint, which is basically true of most hotels of this caliber, is that they charge extra, and a lot extra, for everything not included in the basic rate. Parking is an additional $15 a day, internet access in the lobby was $6 for 15 minutes although there is wifi in the hotel and computer hookups in the room should you be traveling with your own. You can probably find cheaper parking around LAX but it's then a hassle to get back to the hotel. I didn't even bother to look at the restaurants. Oh and the walls of our room were a little thin, we were treated to some early morning and nocturnal entertainment (think Kim Cattrell in "Porky's", her nickname was Lassie should you not have seen it), it might have been amusing had I been there with my husband but since I was with dad, it was just a tad embarrassing! | | | | Los Angeles Adventurer: A Chance Discovery In A Coupon Book | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Los Angeles Adventurer-All Suites-Hotel/Backpacker’s Paradise $44.46 for the night with coupon from the 'Travel Coupon Guide' a nifty little book which can be found at Denny's Restaurants offering discounts on accommodations in California, Utah, Arizona and Nevada. The advertisement for the Los Angeles Adventurer offered a discounted price of $39.00+tax per night for the hotel. There were no other charges added.
What can you expect for $39.00 a night? Located right on the street--which is not charming at all--there was little room to maneuver a car into the registration parking area and the parking facilities, though secured with electronic gates, were nightmarishly tight. (The rented car I had was on the big side.) The room, as advertised, was a 'two room suite with wet bar.' Newly painted, though some peeling paint above the shower was evident. Worn furniture, but clean. TV with cable, room air conditioner, free Continental breakfast, free Afternoon Tea, free Champagne Party and free Cake Party are not the only 'freebies' offered. The Backpacker’s Paradise' section offered a bed in a small room--with about ten beds to a room--for $12.00 per night. The small courtyard area in the middle of the rooms had some nice landscaping, a small pool, pool mini bar and lounge area, a small restaurant with full service bar, and four--that I saw--Internet access stations $1.00 for 10 minutes. The poolside bar offered, from 9am to midnight, Margaritas, beer, wine, hotdogs and ice cream for $.99 each. The Hotel offered free shuttles to various places such as Venice Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Manhattan Village, and other shopping malls. They offered car rentals and had a 'special,' for room and car, $70.00 per day. There was a funky kind of International flavor, everyone had accents, except me, and I’m glad I chose this 'suited-to-my-budget' place. | | | | The Adventurer: Convenience for "Adventurers"-Inglewood/LAX area | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Adventurer All-Suites is located in the LAX/Inglewood area. This is a hostel-hotel. Its exterior resembles a common small hotel but is considered a hostel which caters especially to out of area folks. I happen to stay here because my boyfriend at the time was visiting. I noticed that the staff were of Australian and UK decent, as well as many guests. While walking around the hotel I felt like I was in London or Sydney! Warning ! Don't stay here if you hate a lot of commotion. People party hard at this hotel with beers and blasting music on the grounds every night.
There was a great pool, convenient on-site dining cafe, and many, many amenities. Just about everything was available here for guests- band-aids, nail filers, facial cream, snacks, stationery, etc... Also, free shuttle rides were offered to Venice Beach and to the airport. What a convenience! | | | | Renaissance Hollywood Hotel: Renaissance Hollywood Hotel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Renaissance Hollywood Hotel was completely rebuilt several years ago (during the same time that the massive Hollywood & Highland complex was erected nearby). It's a vast improvement upon the run-down Holiday Inn that used to stand in this place, but it is still a rather generic hotel with no truly special or unique features. Still, it's a totally acceptable place to stay. It's new, comfortable and reasonably affordable. It also has excellent proximity to the sights on Hollywood Blvd. (Mann's Chinese Theatre, The Walk of Fame, El Capitan and The Egyptian Theatre, etc...) and to the Hollywood Bowl. The lobby has a modern air and includes a cozy little bar/lounge area. On the second floor, Twist serves rather expensive California-Asian fusion cuisine. The rooms are fairly standard: bed, desk, armoir with television. It is quiet and comfortable inside. The bathrooms are a really nice size and quite clean and contemporary. Be sure to ask for a room on a higher floor for a good view of the city. The lower rooms tend to look out on air conditioning units and such. Also, you don't want to stay here any time at the end of February, when Oscar preparation consumes the neighborhood and your access to the hotel and surrounding areas will be highly restricted and you'll have to deal with massive amounts of security. Overall, this is a nice, new hotel with decent rates Are there more interesting places to stay in the area? Definitely---the nearby Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, for one. But The Hollywood Renaissance Hotel is just fine and one of the newer hotels in Hollywood/ West Hollywood.
