I am wanting to purchase a prepaid sim card in the US and put it in my phone. I have been reading up on this and it appears the system is a little different than in Australia as we can still receive calls if the credit has run out. I really want this service so I can make local calls and be able to text home and receive texts from home occasionally. Calls home would be for emergency only and then you are not concerned about cost anyway! Is there somewhere in Hollywood we can purchase this as this our first stop? Any particular company or deal that anyone knows of. I have seen information on T mobile.
PS This time next week we will be landing in LA!
I have a France based telephone and when i get to the US of A, I just change the sim card. The card i have is T mobile, the value is according to how much you put in it. if you put 100 usd in it you can get 150 minutes of in and out domestic and also that number of texts in and out.. it is not cheap but it is realiable and you might need it..
calls home via skype is reasonable or absolutely free, but you need a wifi connection and an apparatus that connects you to wi fi.
good luck
The first thing you need to determine is whether or not your phone will make and receive phone calls on the frequencies used in the U.S. They are 850 & 1900. Phones manufactured for use in Australia use two different frequencies, 900 & 1800.
If your phone is not a quadband phone you'll have to find one that is. They're quite common, sometimes known as "world phones" and they don't necessarily cost a lot of money as long as you don't need it to do anything else but make calls and texts.
AT&T has a "GO PHONE" that is about $60 and will do internation text for free. Not sure about the calls. Not that I would want to spend my time shopping for phones, but there are AT&T stores all over the place and probably one inside the airport. I know SFO has a store just outside the international exit.
In the US it is cheaper to purchase a "throwaway phone" than just the pre-paid sim. This way you KNOW that it will work - just go to any mobile shop in a mall which should be able to help.

Well, I got surprised visiting Santa Monica, it s great, and Malibu beaches too.
First thing you should do arriving to LA must be to rent a car, cause otherwise you will cannot visit any place. Dont worry, renting a car is very cheap, can be $40 daily, so if you are with some friends dividing that between your friends will give you a reasonable price.
A rough guide to tipping in Los Angeles Area would be: tip porters a dollar or two per bag; tip concierges nothing for simple information like directions, but US$5 - US$20.00 for things like securing hard-to-get concert tickets; housekeeping staff get a dollar or two per guest per day, waiters and bartenders should be tipped 15-20% of the pretax bill and taxi drivers get 10% to 15%
The Hollywood Sign can be seen from the top of the Hollywood & Highland Center, which is where the Kodak Theatre is located. It doesn't provide the best photograph spot for the famous Hollywood sign (it's kind of small), but at least you can see it. A better place to see the Hollywood sign is to go to Griffiths Park located several blocks northeast of Hollywood.
Quality Cinema
Laemmle is a special Los Angeles chain of movie theaters that are proudly anti-commercial and independently owned. The old school cinema houses have small seats that don't rock and a cup holder for your extra large Coke, but, they are pretty and offer much better service for the most part.
Los Angeles locations:
Downtown- Grande 4
L.A. Valley- Town center 5 in Encino; Fallbrook 7 in West Hills
Popular Laemmle theaters are also in West L.A., Santa Monica, Pasadena and West Hollywood
