I am not sure of that exact location, but I did spend 2 years commuting out to Torrance and stayed at the Homestead Suites about a mile and a half south of there near Carson and Hawthorne, and that area was quite safe. See http://www.homesteadhotels.com/property/Homestead-Studio-Suites-Los-Angeles-Torrance-hotel.html
Immediately north of the property is a fire station, and north of that is a small restaurant district that you can easily walk to. North of the restaurants is a shopping area with a major grocery store (in the Safeway chain, I believe?).
West of the hotel is a residential neighborhood, and east of the hotel is a Hilton, and across Hawthorne is the Del Amo mall (I am doing this all from memory ;-) ).
Anyway, the Homestead Suites is accustomed to business travelers staying there repeatedly, so they get to know you, and I wouldn't think that any reasonably self-assured woman would have a problem there...and you get to save money by cooking for yourself (which I did)...

Hi, we have stayed at the Staybridge Suites in Torrance many times. My sister used to work there and I still have a few freinds that work there. The area is very safe and nice. You will be close to grocery stores and restaurants and the Del Amo mall for shopping.
They serve a good breakfast in the morning free to guests and some afternoon/evenings there is free bbq and free beer and wine.
The hotel caters to the businessman but its great for families too.
The staff is very nice and customer service is a priority. There is also a nice pool and grills in case you want to bbq. Sometimes the staff will bake chocolate chip cookies for the guest and have them at the front desk. This area of Torrance is definitely better than the Carson or Hawthorne area.
I think you will like this place. Our family did:)

Sorry Bill, i read you message wrong. I thought you were refering to the city of Hawthorne or city of Carson. I realize that you were talking about the streets Carson Street and Hawthorne Blvd. which go into Torrance as well.

Yep, I meant the streets, which is how we referred to them (rightly or wrongly)...isn't English great? ;-)
I'm glad you came back to talk about the Staybridge itself, because I seldom went up in that direction even though it wasn't far away...I worked south at Hawthorne and PCH, and drove around between there and Manhattan Beach along PCH...

Torrance and LA in general is safe if you are. Practice common sense and stay in code yellow (be alert) as you should anywhere and you'll be fine. it would also be a good idea to put the liv ask police number in your phone since calling 911 from a cell with contact highway patrol. just to be safe, but you won't be needing it. Have fun!

Travel Tips for Los Angeles
Websites
by Dabs
I just found this very informative website on Los Angeles, not sure why I've never used it before. See My LA is the LA Convention and Visitors Bureau website and has a ton of info on what to see and do in LA. Log on and you can order a free visitors guide.
It also has a link to another website LA Downtown Guide which has terrific information on touring the city's downtown area.
Wear what ever you want, no...
by Stellco
Wear what ever you want, no one would even notice whether you are wearing a binbag around, they are all too wrapped up in their own lives, the perfect oppurtunity to try out those shoes you were never too sure about! Sunset over Venice beach (before the cops chucked us off!)
Window Shopping at Rodeo Drive
by SLLiew
Fun to do window shopping at the many branded stores of the rich and famous on Rodeo Drive. Hang on to your credit card if you find yourself caught in a shoping frenzy.
Alternatively, you can sit a roadside cafe and see if you can spot anyone famous.
Most Stupid Tourist Trap
by vigi
I think this "Home of the Stars" tour is the most stupid and expensive tourist trap I have been to... imagine you're stuck in a car for 1.5 hours browsing through other's people's house (to be exact, should be somebody's fence, as you cannot enter the house). And listen to the driver's boring stories which most likely you can find on the net! They charge US$35 for this?!!! It felt a waste of time even though I don't have to pay (but my brother did...)
Feel the non-LA chaos here!

Peace and quiet while in L.A.!
La Mirada is a tranquil, family-friendly location to stay if visiting both Los Angeles and Orange County. The neighborhoods are fairly clean and unassuming. Crimes are not so common here at all. I'm a bit taken off guard whenever I hear La Mirada on the news for anything. This is good place to mix in the local and judge L.A on a very positive note.
