Dollar Rent a Car : LAX

by vtveen

Who has recently rented a car from Dollar at their LAX depot and what was your experience ??

Re: Dollar Rent a Car : LAX

Hi
We used Dollar last October. We picked up the car in San Francisco and dropped it back at LAX. They were very efficient, the car was what we expected and the LAX depot was huge and they had buses transporting people to the airport terminals.Very short bus ride. If anything negative when we were picking up the staff were in no hurry. Lucky there was not many people waiting.
I booked through Driveaway and got a very good deal.

Be sure you read the contract and fine print before you sign. Friends of mine declined insurance but found when they returned the car the agent had still applied the insurance. Don't forget car rental reservationist get a commission on all the extra's they can sell. I have used dollar myself in the past and never had a problem, but I will certainly be more vigilant when I sign their contract at time of rental pickup.

I frequently rent with Dollar at LAX and have always had a great experience. Quick shuttles, good customer service, and I always get upgraded for free. I used them again last month while I was in LA and it was flawless.

I have rented a car through Dollar, but not recently. However, I have heard nothing that would keep me from renting from them now.

I agree that you should make sure you and the car are covered by insurance, either your own or you will have to buy theirs. Most states require minimum coverage, but car rentals require full coverage.

Here, some credit cards will cover the car completly if you use that card to pay for the rental. Check with your credit card companies to see if they offer that too.

Adding to the warning of "read your contract," I'd also suggest to make sure the rental company allows "unlimited" miles. This will save you quite a bit. Also, when you return the car, fill the gas tank up yourself, as the rental companies tend to charge a higher price per gallon of gas than you can get at ARCO or some of the independant gas stations.

Pollution

by blaird

This is definitely not my favorite thing about LA, it is one of my least favorite.

For the third straight year (take a deep breath now, since I can't) the top four most ozone-polluted metropolitan areas were in California, with Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County topping the list.

If you aren't aware, ozone can damage the lungs and airways, causing them to become inflamed. This response can cause coughing, burning sensations and shortness of breath. There is also research that shows that long exposure to even relatively low levels of ozone may lead to poor lung function, problems breathing, and inflamed lungs.

Ahhh, the joys of L.A. The picture here is from one of the few clear days in L.A., I was so happy I had my carpooling friend take a few pictures!

Get Some Street Tacos and Hot Dogs if you dare

by marinarena

Street Tacos and Hot Dogs!

Numerous streets have food vendors sizzling great grub during the day. Downtown LA is a main street food spot. A few times, I go for a taco, usually with chicken, from a food vendor mobile. When I really don't care about the excess, I go for a jumbo hot dog or sausage. The hot dogs are particularly popular these days w/ a generous topping of onions and peppers. There are some risks doing all this of course. Sanitary practices may not be followed correctly by food preparers. This could be the case also of restaurant workers of whom the public almost never sees making the food up close. Look for a food preparation on the food cart or on a mobile license if you want to be extra careful.

Some likely key spots for street tacos, hot dogs and other foods are:

Downtown
along and near Los Angeles St, esp between 4th and 5th
outside of Macy's Plaza (off 7th and Metro, towards plaza, near Financial and Jewelry District)

Downtown adjacent area:

-Westlake District (just west of downtown)
on and near Alvarado St

-Koreatown
corner of Wilshire and Vermont
