Hotel downtown

by bean4bean4

Hi I will be in LA at the beginning of August for 7 days. I want to visit everything (Universal, sunset, rodeo, getty, santa monica beaches, etc....)

I can make a reservation at OMNI LA DOWNTOWN which I believe is a nice hotel for a fair price.

BUT at the same time, I realize there's not much to see downtown.

People suggest me to book a hotel in West LA or santa monica...but the rates are far higher than Omni's rates.

I am wondering what I should do---- and I have decided I will rent a CAR...

But in Hollywood or west LA prices are higher...So, if I book downtown LA and I have a car, may I conclude its the best option?

Or would it be better to book a hotel in HOllywood or santa monica (more central) - and with a CAR as well - in order to be closer to everything?

I must admit I am very confused.

I would like to book a hotel which is central at a fair price. Lets say if I save 75 bucks a day booking OMNI downtown === is it enough when I have to consider the money I will have to pay for parkings and the distance I will have to drive?

Well, it would likely be better to base yourself in Hollywood or Santa Monica, however, since you will have a car it is really not a problem to stay at the Omni. There are still a number of things downtown to visit, like Olvera Street, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, and the designer outlet shopping area at Santee St and Los Angeles St., and of course L.A. LIVE, the entertainment center that includes the Staples Center, the home of the Lakers.

Here is my Los Angeles/Hollywood/Beverly Hills page with a lot of stuff including the pertinent websites, including the above mentioned places.

If you have specific questions, come back for more info. Good luck.....d:o)

By the way, Downtown has undergone some serious changes in the last decade, and has become the trendy place to live. Plenty of restaurants and bars/clubs.

Not konwing what your price point is, consider the various hotels on Sunset (check Google). I routinely stayed at the Rennasance (Kodak Theater) for a reasonable price to visit my daughter in Hollywood. I would not stay in Santa Monica as traffic in/out can be terrible on 10 so it's probably better to use that as a destination visit.

You are going to need a car; public transportation in LA is not the best. the "metro" can get you to some places but not much that you have mentioned. There is limited street parking off of Sunset and rodeo that is free, but it is rather limited and in demand.

Have a great trip; I'll wave as I drive through.

Dont know how much OMNI costs but check out www.beverlyhillsplazahotel.com , they have given me rate of $133 per night with third or forth night free. Zair Caceres is the General Manager (310)275-5575 or (800) 800-1234 Its on Wilshire. Also check out the San Angelin its close to Beverly Dr. They also have good deals. Also check out hotwire.com they also have great hotel and car prices. AND yes, look up ERIC's suggstions. He knows his stuff.

Well, a hotel Downtown may be a little cheaper but not only is it not an ideal area, but you'll also be charged for nightly parking.
Looking at it, the Omni charges $30/night for parking. That includes in/out privileges, which is nice, but that still factors in to the cost of the whole stay when you consider that many hotels (not all, mind you) in the West LA region have free parking.

Visit Sunset Boulevard at night! Having lunch on the Santa Monica Pier, watching whales come to the surface of the Pacific. The sun was glittering off the ocean, the view was beautiful, and the people watching was great...

Downtown is (maybe was) kinda Post Apolcalyptic..

by giampiero6

The title says it all. While, Chinatown and Little Tokyo as well as a museum and the music center are downtown, after night fall, dowtown is pretty much a deserted no man's land. Some of the major swank hotels are located in this area, and unless you're doing something in particular at one of the areas above, you're just wandering around deserted streets. There are for example, no grocery stores in downtown at night and no foot traffic except for the bums in skid row. You heard it here first. Some boosters will disagree with me, but realistically it's a disgrace that LA's downtown is so deserted.

UPDATE- some major steps have been made, and downtown is starting to come around a little more, much like it did in the 80s before crashing. But it seems a bit different this time, and as a testament to the possible viability of downtown as a residential area, Ralph's supermarkets is even planning on putting in downtown's first full service supermarket.

Hoever it shakes out, don't expect to head downtown at night and see a bustling street life like you'd expect in NYC or other 'downtown' areas like European historical centers.
