Getty Museum

by kelhan

We'll be staying in Hollywood for a few nights on and LA stopover and would like to visit the Getty Museum up on the hill. Won't be hiring a car, so what's the best way to get there with a combo of value and speed (don't want to spend half a day getting there)

Any other hints on the Getty would be appreciated also

There are two Getty Museums. The one you are referring to is the Getty Center. The other, the Getty Villa in Malibu needs advanced (via internet) ticketing per person to get inside. See their website: http://www.getty.edu/visit/

I have the Getty Villa tip and photos in 4 travelogues on my VT Malibu tips: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/736c8/b80ff/

I have no personal knowledge of how to get there (the one in LA) by public transport, since I had a car. However, if you will look at
http://www.getty.edu/visit/hours/index.html
down the page on the left under "Public Transportation", the museum's website provides info and links on how to use the LA transit website to figure out how to get there by public transit.

I suspect that you will agree that the location is nearly as impressive as the collection ;-)

I don't know the address of the place you'll be in Hollywood, but you can plan out your trip from here:

http://latranstar.tann.com/tripplanner.asp

I do know that the #761 Rapid/Westwood bus will take you to The Getty Center. It should take less than an hour and you can make an early start to get there by opening time.

The Getty Center is free but parking is $15.00 so taking public transportation is best in any case.

From the Getty website "From Hollywood
From Sunset Blvd., take Metro Rapid Bus 2 (direction PCH) to Hilgard Ave./Westholme Ave. at UCLA, (approximately 35 minutes). Cross to southeast corner and take Metro Rapid Bus 761 (direction Pacoima) to the Getty Center stop (approximately 12 minutes). This is actually pretty easy. The #2 bus heads West on Sunset Blvd (past some pretty high end places, the Beverly Hills Hotel, etc.), until you hit the Northern end of UCLA where you switch to the 761 up to Getty. Even with a taxi you would only save a little wait time. Karl

Travel Tips for Los Angeles

Venice Beach

by texasaussie

Venice Beach was beautiful.
Be careful when walking the boardwalk you can be pulled into over priced items which you could find cheaper when you walk futher down the path.
EXAMPLE: At the beginning of the boardwalk I paid $8 for a henna tatto but a few minutes of a walk down the road I got it for $5. Also, don't be scared to bargain...
Beware of Pot heads and homeless people. They will obviously ask you for money.
You will see a lot of stores with weed symbols but Venice Beach is known for that kind of stuff.
Live entertainment occasionally.
If you like to pump iron, get this... there is an outdoor gym! Tan and get a little tone. ;-)
Get a henna tattoo. It will last about 1-3 weeks. Great for the Summer.
It's a little cooler in Venice Beach too, so bringing a light jacket wouldnt be a bad idea. I will definately miss the beautiful tan which the sun burnt into me.
If you would like a tan, lay out in the sun for an hour or 2...
I will miss the palms down the roads.

Go to the Getty Museum. The building's architecture and landscape, let alone the art it houses, is magnificent. I go every year, and I'm still not tired of it. I used to spend summer weekends basking in the sun at the beach at Marina Del Rey. I would read a book, people watch, plane watch (taking off from Los Angeles International Airport), boat watch, jog to Venice Beach and back, and close my eyes to listen to the waves.

The night life in L.A. is just awesome. No matter if you chose to hang out in Hollywood, Santa Monica or other beach cities like Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach - party 24/7!!

The beach is my favorite weekend hang out. Just dig out those worn out rollerblades and a volleyball and head down to the beach... Definately the weather. Summer lasts from April till mid November. Even the remaining months of the year are really comfy (compared to Germany, which I left for this little pice of paradise).

Wilshire Boulevard

by draguza

Wilshire Boulevard is one of the principal east-west arterial roads in Los Angeles, California. Running 16 miles from Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles to Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, it has been called "the backbone of Los Angeles." Many of the post-1956 skyscrapers in Los Angeles are located along Wilshire; indeed, one of the oldest and tallest is known simply as "One Wilshire." All of the boulevard is at least four lanes in width. The widest portion is in the business district of central Westwood, where mobs of pedestrians crossing Wilshire at Westwood Boulevard must traverse ten lanes (including two left-turn pockets). This and the nearby intersection of Wilshire and Veteran are among the busiest in Los Angeles.

See Movies by the Grove for cheaper

Cheap but Good Movie Theater Houses!

A nice outing can be had in the Fairfax District. At the Fairfax 3 movie theater, all movies are just $3. Later-run movies are only shown here but saving some bucks on the theater experience is good and mostly likely, one has missed a flick from the opening weeks of release. the theater is kept clean (no sticky floors), seats are wide and comfty. The Grove is just a block away for pre or post-movie entertainment.

Fairfax 3 is on the NW end of Fairfax/Beverly.
