Lots of great hotel chains...
Lots of great hotel chains (Westin, 4-Seasons, Hyatt) and lots of small motels....not to worry really...but you have to plan on staying closer to places where it's happening. The Century Plaza is close to the Westside, Beaches and Beverly Hills and it is a very good hotel. Lots of reasonable bed and breakfast areas a little up north of the coastline but you may have to check the peak seasons (prices fluctuate).

5 minutes from Universal Studios, the location is great. You can choose from dorm-style or private rooms.

Normally this is a vine that grows along the ground. Here, they spent years training it to grow up the archway so that it might offer up the sweet and delicate scent of it's blooms to those who choose to pass by. Nearby, there is a bench for those who choose to sit in the shade and simply take in the serene portrait of the past before them.

Not recommended! Beverly Garland Holiday Inn
Although the hotel has all the amenities one could wish for, friendly staff and reasonable prices, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you bring earplugs! It is situated among several highways that have constant traffic day and night. And the rooms aren't very well insulated against noise... With the earplugs however, I slept just fine :)

We stayed at a Travel Lodge in Burbank. It's good and reasonable. If you are just looking for a place to lay your head in between all the excursions, this will do but don't expect alot of ammenities.
I believe around $70 a night
Reasonably priced. You are next to a main road so if traffic keeps you up, you will want to stay somewhere else.

You can find cheap hotels all around. If you are like three you guys don't go to a hostel. A motel or hotel is more cheaper.
We had a big room almost for nothing. 50$ room/night

For those who have some $ to spend, the Mondrian Hotel
puts you in the middle of the nightlife action as the Sky Bar is a favorite hangout of the stars as it is owned by Randy Gerber (Cindy Crawford's Hubby).
Hotel pool has a great view and the restaurants like Asia de Cuba make the hotel a destination for the locals.

There are a ton of really nice hotels in Beverly Hills but I reccommend staying at the beach. Try Shutters on the beach.

We stayed one night in a place...
We stayed one night in a place called Banana Hostel or something like that. Supposedly a backpacker place - but it really sucked. We hated it.
I had been backpacking for 5 months now with my two girlfriends through Asia and Australia and stayed in quite a few places - but this one really didn't feel safe or comfortable. Luckily one of my girlfriends had a few years prior to this worked as an au pair / nanny staying with a family in San Fernando Valley. We called them up and they were so kind as to let us stay at their house. Though the three of us slept on an old fold out couch in the kitchen, it was a good experience. This way we were also able to get a look at how American families live their daily lifes.

I stayed in a motel called 777 Motor Inn, which cost me $500 for the two weeks, this was from mid May to the end of May. It was clean and comfortable. There was no kitchenette so all my food had to be take away. A very large double bed, if you are travelling by yourself. it was about five minutes or less from the beach, and the bus stops only a minute walk. There were a few motels Ocean view and Pacific motel. The motels are on the Pacific coast highway.
