LAX transit stop

by marybrigid

Am travelling from Australia to UK with a 2 hour transit stop in LAX. I will not be leaving the transit lounge. Do I need to obtain a waiver (Visa)for this stop? Will also be doing the trip in reverse. I am travelling on an australian passport.

Re: LAX transit stop

This may all depend on your air connections and where you will clear customs. If you are on the same airline and do not change from one airline to another you should be fine.

This question pops up regularly.

The USA requires ALL passengers to pass through immigration (passport control) even on International-to-International (I-to-I) travel, irrespective of airlines. The TWOV (transit without visa) program has been suspended since a couple of years. There are no "transit" lounges in USA airports.

As you are the bearer of an Australian passport you don't need a visa (falling under the VWP program) but you DO need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization).

It may even be possible that you have to pick-up your luggage, pass through customs and then to drop-off your bags for your next flight (even if it's on the same airline, I-to-I) at the drop-off points just when you leave the customs area.

On this page you will also find a link to apply. Since September you have to pay a fee of USD 14.

I travelled frequently I-to-I through the USA the last couple of years; the last time in January this year, through Houston.

You will be arriving in the John Bradly International Terminal. You may have to change terminals depending on what airline you will be flying to the UK, take a look at the LAX terminal maps on the LAX web site to determine the departure terminal of your onward airline. If you need to change terminals, you will need to go through security once you reach the terminal, and once you go through Customs in the Intl terminal, you may be able to have your luggage sent onward to your connecting airline via the luggage transfer system. However if you are flying United, from Australia to the UK they have their own customs clearance in one of their terminals.

One correction to the post above. The International Terminal is actually the "Tom Bradley" Terminal.

Yep your right, don't know why I typed in John instead Tom, thanks for correcting me.

Tku to you all for your input. I am flying Air New Zealand and will be getting back on the same plane to go on to London. The stop is a fuel stop and to take on more travellers.

Re: LAX transit stop

by nhoolb

In that case: Air New Zealand indeed has a transit lounge but nevertheless you are required to be inspected (passport, fingerprints and ESTA) by US CBP.
It seems however that the luggage remains on board of the aircraft.

Travel Tips for Los Angeles

Planning the trip

by iam1wthee

There are so many things to see and do that one week will not be enough to cover everything. Most attractions are not all located in one place they are spaced far apart. If you are not afraid to drive in a different place then a car will definitely help in getting you around. However, I recommend that you reserve a car before you get there. Several people tried to rent a car and due to many conventions there was none available.

Anacapa Island lies 11 miles...

by Pamela_Peace

Anacapa Island lies 11 miles southwest of Oxnard and 14 miles south of Ventura. It is almost 5 miles long and covers about 1 square mile. This particular Channel Island is actually 3 small islets which are inaccessible from each other except by boat. January through March is gray whale watch season. These tremendous mammals can be seen swimming the 10,000 mile migration route to the warmer waters of Mexico for mating and calfing. June through September is the time to watch out for the blue and humpback whales who return to feed off the north shore of Santa Rosa Island. The yellow flowers here are called coreopis and the red ones are iceplant. Both grow in abundance atop the Channel Islands although little topsoil exists.

I'd take someone blazing down a mountain trail, careening over rocks, sand and trees (with an occasional rattelsnake). Finish off with a sunset at the beach in Malibu. Forget Hollywood. It's all glitter and trash. A sad place really. In fact, most movie production activity has moved to the West Side. Check out the 3rd Street promonade in Santa Monica, Main Street and other sites on the West Side. Lots of fine dining opportunities and infinitely more comely. I live in L.A., so I miss the weather, what else!? Also, a multitude of things to do in a relaxed setting.

by Pamela_Peace

In 1542, the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed into the Santa Barbara Channel under the Spanish flag. He was the first European to land on the Channel Islands. The name of Anacapa came about when Cabrillo misspelled the Indian name for the island which meant in the Chumash tongue 'mirage.' He was followed by other explorers from England and Russia, and eventually by American fur traders who all but extinguished the otter population. Hunters next concentrated on taking seals an sea lions for their fur and oil. In the early 1800's the Chumash Indians and their neighbors in Santa Barbara, the Gabrielino, were removed to mainland missions.

spend half a day at Knott's Berry Farm in Anaheim. It's just a stone's throw away from the more popular and world-famous Disneyland.

For more info, please surf to the official website of this theme park - touted as America's first and oldest theme park.
