Stillwell Hotel

For $50-60 a night, the Stillwell can provide a simple, clean room. The hotel is old, so try to stay on as high as floor as possible for the nicer rooms with newer carpet. It is away from the rich section of Downtown but easy walking distance to transportation (subway, buses, taxis). They are used to and friendly with travelers. The Indian restaurant is acceptable and the Mexican restaurant has good $5 chicken sandwiches. Hank's Bar is friendly and inexpensive, very easy to meet people--though there are a few characters now and then.

Unique Quality: Hank's Bar is friendly to travelers, far more so than much of L.A.

I ve been at Stilwell hotel at the center of LA. I don t know exactly the price as I bought the days from home, but you can find it in white pages of LA.

Unique Quality: It has parking

10th floor, top floor. Room cleaniness is acceptable.

Unique Quality: Sound proofing between two neighboring rooms is much needed. An elderly asthmatic moved into my next door about 5 am, awakening me, and he even came knocking at my door at 6 to check if I was ok because of my normal "getting out of bed" routines.

Directions: nearest metro train station is metro center

This is nothing more than a glorified transient hotel which lures-in unsuspecting tourists and otherwise caters to transients and degenerates. It is filthy and dangerous.

Unique Quality: Cockroaches abound. Staff are rude and unpleasant.
