USA Hollywood Hostel
Very clean, good price, great location, and each room has their own bathroom with a shower. Each room is slightly different. Some have larger lockers, some have beds with a little shelf and outlet for each person. So, if you have a choice, you may ask to see a couple rooms. Free pancake breakfast, but the kitchen is very small. They are re-doing some parts of the hostel to make it even better. Very nice staff.
Another good thing is I paid with credit card, including the $10 deposit and when I would check out, they gave me the $10 back in cash.
It is directly across from a large building offering many gay and lesbian services, you will recognize it by large rainbow colored flags outside.
Unique Quality: Wonderful location, one block from Hollywood Blvd. and close to bus stations, metro.

Nice hostel in Hollywood
This is where I stayed upon my return to LA. Like the Orbit Hostel, there was nothing particularly spectacular about it, but I had no complaints. The hostel was clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and the location meant I was within easy walking distance of most places in Hollywood. The dorm I was in slept 6 people, had an ensuite bathroom, lockers (own padlock needed) and was spacious and very clean.
Unique Quality: Facilities included laundry, internet access, kitchen, communal areas including dining room, tv room and smoking room, free luggage storage. They also offer free tea & coffee and free pancake breakfast (just don't forget your chefs hat as you have to cook it yourself!) What really drew me to this hostel instead of going back to the Orbit was that they run a shuttle service between LA & San Francisco for $45 (about the same price as a greyhound ticket but FAR more convenient!)

hostels in LA
my sis and i are planning a trip to LA in early august and we can't decide between the following 2 hostels. USA hostels hollywood on hollywood boulevard itself and the orbit hostel and hotel on melrose ave. anyone stayed at these 2 hostels before? any advice? we are more concerned with safety and convenience to cheap shopping and food.

If the orbit is the one at bananabungalow.com, then its a good choice.
There is also the Claremont Hotel in Westwood that is about $60 a night for two in a private room. Great area near UCLA, you can even take advantage of cheap food at UCLA cafeterias.
