Suggestions of Things to do in Downtown LA
by nkhong
I will be staying in Downtown LA on the 31st close to the Staples center. Can anyone suggest anything to do or worthwhile seeing while I am there in that area? Will try and drop off luggage at the hotel early so hoping to have lunch in that area and do some sightseeing.

Los Angeles is a great city and there is so much to see and do here. If you go downtown you can visit its architectural sites and shopping areas. You can check out the link http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/25967/10_things_to_do_in_downtown_los_angeles.html?cat=8 to get some idea.

You might check out to see if they have an "0n & Off" type tour bus--I think they do but am not sure--this would take you to the most popular sights in the city and a nice day trip. Downtown there's China Town, the garment district and Olevera Street that might be interesting to see.
Downtown has lots of new stuff going on and you might check out what VT Member, "Odinnthor" has to say.

About a mile toward downtown from the Staples Center, between 3rd and 4th Streets on Grand Ave or Hill St sits one of Los Angeles' icons, the Angels Flight. On New Year's Eve, during the running hours (6:45 a.m. until 10 p.m.) the fare will be only one penny for the flight up or the flight down. I took this ride many time during the 1940's and 1950's and still find it a wonderful Los Angeles experience. See their website: http://angelsflight.com/
Across the street, at 317 S. Broadway, is another icon of Los Angeles, the Grand Central Market. Not just for shopping, but a great way to see people in friendly banter amongst the many vendors. See their website: http://www.grandcentralsquare.com/index.html
Within a mile of Angeles Flight and Grand Central Market are the Music Center, Olvero Street and Chinatown. Have fun and Happy New Year. :-)

In my opinion you will be in a nice place in LA. the staples center area has a station of the underground very accesible. My advice is to use the subway to move around downtown (most of places suggested above), I experienced this and it was very easy to move in downtown since there are stations in china town, olvera street, the old theaters area etc. it is really easy and most of all, very inexpensive, buy a ticket for the day and hop on and off as you need.
good luck.
Travel Tips for Los Angeles
LA Disneyland
by Jiang_Cucha
The staff in Disneyland is very professional and polite. They never push us to leave though we devoted ourselves to shopping and became the last group of tourist in Disneyland...it is midnight time and running away their working time...
The J. Paul Getty Center (Art Museum)
by yooperprof
The Getty Museum - high in the hills over Westwood - offers some fantastic views of the ocean and much of the city as well. The dramatic architectural and landscape design (Richard Meier) is everything you could hope for. The collection is itself pretty spectacular, but what impressed me the most was the way that the building was so well suited to its site. I hope that it is really as earthquake-resistant as it was designed to be!
For the star-struck visit...
by pilgrim1031
For the star-struck visit Hollywood and Vine, for the shoppers go to Melrose and Fairfax, for the rich eat in Beverly Hills, for the theme park lovers check out Universal Studios, for the children you must go to Disneyland, and just to say you've been walk along the Santa Monica pier. If you visit the South Bay, eat crabs at the Redondo Beach Pier. Don't forget to take a drive up Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu around sunset. The traffic. Just kidding. The Sun setting into the Pacific Ocean.
Along Pico from Downtown L.A.
by marinarena
One can explore latino (particularly Mexican) culture about everywhere in Los Angeles. Yet, going from downtown L.A. on Pico Ave is an especially interesting way to discover Latino life and culture. I love to capture murals like this one (along Pico). I happen to be on the bus when I snapped this one. The smeared look of this pic from the bus window adds an interesting effect of the image. It is that of an angel. The mural reads, " We are each of us angels with one wing. We can only fly embracing each other." There are so many murals, small and big, to count throughout the city.
Los Angeles Tip

O.K., I know this sounds kinda unusual.... My friends brought me to see this...this....very touristy sight called the La Brea Tarpits.
About 40,000 years ago, deposits of oil rose to the Earth's surface... collected in shallow pools and coagulated into sticky asphalt. Fast forward... to the early-20th century, geologists discovered that the sticky goo contained the largest collection of Pleistocene or Ice Age fossils ever found at one location: more than 600 species of birds, mammals, plants, reptiles and insects! More than 100 tons of fossil bones have been removed in excavations over the last seven decades.
In all seriousness, it's a pretty interesting tourist attraction, so check it out O.K.?
