BED BUGS

DON'T EVER EVER EVER STAY AT 1515 PACIFIC AVE VENICE BEACH HOSTEL. SURE IT'S NEXT TO THE BEACH, BUT THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST VILE PLACES I HAVE EVER STAYED AT IN MY WORLD OF TRAVELS. MANY CASES OF BED BUGS, AND DRUG ADDICTS HAVING KEYS TO ROOMS THAT EMPLOYEES DONT CARE ABOUT. BED BUGS BED BUGS BED BUGS. Never been so sick felt unwanted by the staff and MOST of all by THE OWNER LOWEST PIECE OF ---- I ever met. STAY AWAY

Unique Quality: BED BUGS STAY AWAY OR WEAR A SPACE SUITE

Chilled atmosphere right on the beach

I've stayed in the Cotel several times since '87 and it never seems to change. There is always a good (international) crowd in here and the location can't be beaten if you're there to check out the beach scene. Not too much in the way of shops there though and I'd advise taxi's if you want to get out at night. Santa Monica is a good walk along the beach path (about an hour from memory). The advantage of the Cotel is that it is chilled out and there aren't the restrictions that official hostels have. The bar here can be a lot of fun at nights - all depends on the crowd there at the time as always.

Unique Quality: The view from the window while enjoying a complimentary coffee here, makes it worth staying here.
The rooms are basic but it's the crowd that this Cotel attracts that makes this a great place to stay.

Where to stay in LA?

Low cost places to sleep include Hostels http://www.kasbah.com/hostels/hostels.asp?hostel=Los%20Angeles and you can also try Globalfreeloaders which offers home stays with fellow travellers around the world http://www.globalfreeloaders.com.

All the hostels on the list are good and each have their own charm and attractions that they are close to. As for globalfreeloaders, you can read the references and it's a fun way to see how people live, not just in Los Angeles, but around the world.

If you want to be near the beach, try the Venice Beach Hostel. It is in a great location about 10km from LAX, with plenty of food and shopping in the immediate vicinity as well as all the entertainment that can be seen every weekend on Venice Beach.

Venice Beach Cotel

$22US

Unique Quality: Bit of a dive, but its all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!You can litrally roll out of bed into the sand, it is that close! If you spit out of the window(not advised) you could probably hit the beach! Get an Oceanview room, definately worth it!

Venice Beach Hostel
12.50 a night

Unique Quality: Frankly I myself have never stayed here but I have heard it is one of the best Hostels in La. How bad could it be considering it is on the beach! Call before you decide, as with all in life.

Hostels v hotels

by PamRay

Has anyone stayed at the Venice Beach Hostel & Hotel or the AAE Airport LA Economy Hotel and Hostel in one of their private ensuite rooms, we have 2 nights en route to Las Vegas then another night en route to Orlando, are they safe to stay in. I read one review about a hostel in Hollywood where homeless people came in all the time begging for money, so we don't want to have to deal with that sort of thing.
Thanks
Pam

i have not satyed at <any of the hostels you mention but at several other hostels in california and none of them had an unsafe feeling to them and i never saw homeless people begging there.

it might just be a rumour made by a person who hates backpackers and hostels in general.
