Don't Bother With This Dive!?!

DON'T BOTHER STAYING HERE, GET SOMEWHERE CLOSER TO THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS, FOR A MUCH BETTER SLEEP, EXPERIENCE, NICER PEOPLE, NICER STAFF, BETTER FACILITIES, PICTURES DON'T EVEN RELATE TO THE HOSTEL, AND THE DESCRIPTION ABOUT THIS HOSTEL IS VERY FABRICATED.

This place is Dirty, Breakfast is Rubbish, Private rooms are 3 blocks (10-15 Mins Walk) away from the main house, the private section has no wifi which I need for work, Wifi is only in the main house, Our private room had windows that didn't close, very loud road outside, minimal security.

Smoking is allowed in the rooms and common area, so if your not a smoker then, again, don't bother staying here. The Manager (Slimy high pitched British guy) has something to say about everything, he's very rude and very unhelpful, he wants appreciation for every little thing he does, and if theres any problem he will say something, he speaks to people as if he is high and mighty. He needs to realise he is running a HOSTEL!

There is no real atmosphere here, nobody really leaves the hostel, it seems like there are a lot of long termers here, who don't really do much, the beach is not so close, maybe 30-40 minutes walk.

Transport to LAX. Keep car or get taxi?

by sylv2

HI Everyone. I just wanted some advice on getting to the airport to return home. :( We depart LA airport at 9:30 pm. We will be staying at either Rendondo or Manhattan Beach area prior to leaving. We will have a car which we are in the process of booking. We are not sure if we should hand the car back in the morning at a drop off office in the beach area and get a taxi later in the day or drive ourselves to the airport and drop off there. We need to be at the airport 3 hours from what i understand. I have watched so many airport shows where the airlines overbook or people get confused and miss their flight i have become quite paranoid at the thought! We will have had the car for 2 weeks by this time so should be reasonably comfortable driving i guess.

LAX is not as scary as you are expecting. I transited through it 5 times with no problems. There is the inevitable security line but aside from that it seemed to be a well organised airport.

All the major car hire companies have offices located close to the airport and provide a shuttle service to the terminal after you drop off your car.

Manhattan Beach is about four miles closer to LAX than Redondo Beach and it is a pretty nice "small town" beach community.

If you initially picked-up the car from the Airport location, I'd say it would be best to drop it off at the same place. The car rental companies at the airport offer shuttle service back to the airport.

Though I'm guessing, I believe that your hotel will also offer shuttle service, to/from LAX, either free or for a small charge. Even if you had to take a taxi back to the airport the cost shouldn't be too much.

The airport has been basically "compartmentalized" and the Terminal you'll take off from should be easy to get to and small enough that you won't get lost. If the flight happens to be "overbooked" they would more than likely assist you in making arrangements for the delay. Remember, those shows you may have seen are focusing on a specific thing for a specific reason. It is quite rare that anyone who has paid their airfare is left stranded in any way.

I'd recommend droping your rental car back at the aiport - it's very quick and simple, the rental lots are well sign posted and they all off a shuttle to the terminals.

Keep the car. Sometimes, I drop my fellow travlers off at the terminal, drop the car, and ride the shuttle back to meet up with them. That way you don't have to wrestle the bags and more people than necessary on/off the shuttles, which can be crowded. In fact, last time we were at LAX the hotel shuttle was full and told people at the last two stops they had to wait for the next one.

do both of what JNames wrote.
He beat me to the post again.

every major car rental will have a drop off at LAX. U paid for it, use it to completeness instead of paying again for a shuttle.

Travel Tips for Los Angeles

When at the Music Center

by Roadquill

If you arrive early, enjoy coffee, drinks or a light meal outside on the patio between the Dorothy Chandler Music Center and the Mark Taper Forum. There is usually a good water fountain show. Parking is $6.00 under the Music Center, a little bit less if you park a few blocks away.

Grab a book, pay a visit to Venice Beach. Over 95% you would be able to enjoy the California sunshine here. Rent a bike or roller-blade to feel the local life. My favourite is the 'druming group' gathered on Venice beach every weekend. Enthusiasts would bring along their own drums, gather on the beach and jam along. Not only different kinds of drums, you will also see people playing with their plastic bucket. You can easily locate them, by the sound of the drums or a large crowd (one time it got up to 100!) gathered on the beach.

Western gulls build their nests among the iceplants of the Channel Islands. They will lay 2 or 3 eggs at one time, but there is a 97% mortality rate. The red dot on the beak serves as a target or bullseye for the young when feeding.

CHARITIES ARE THE RAVE

by travelgourmet

Charities are the rave in LA. If you are in town and can afford to attend one of the galas that appear almost nightly, do, do, do. It is fun to do and also you will hopefully be benefiting a worthy cause. Why a rave? Well LA is also Hollywood and the glitz and glamour of it all draws a crowd. Most are in it to be seen or see and sometimes a great meal is to be had.

KCET Public Television gave such a party in Beverly Hills, featuring noted TV personality/ Master Chef Jacques Pepin. He was giving out his soon to be released cook book. Jacques came around to every table and signed his new book on cooking. My wife, Sue, and I had met Jacques before at a cooking class that he presented with his daughter, Claudine. Glitz? You bet! Three chefs came out and presented their food dishes with explanations of the ingredients. Glamour? You bet! High fashion and casual elegance filled the room. A great meal? You bet! With top notch chefs, it has to be. And fun was had by all. I love LA.
