Mammoth is Superb!
by giampiero6
SKI! Mammoth is a superb ski resort! The mountain is HUGE. There is almost always good snow and it's mostly reasonably mild. I've skiied in Colorado and the Alps and I would say that purely for skiing, Mammoth is better. (the restaurants, and town, apres ski, etc. are better in Europe) I HIGHLY recommend this ski resort! And! If you come in winter to LA, you can literally swim in the ocean one day and go skiing the next.
Convict Lake

HIking at Convict Lake -- Nice views with varied terrain. There is a trail around the lake, but about half way around there is another trail that leads into the mountains.
We followed the trail into the mountains and got some great views of the lake and area below us. General hiking gear.
Lookout Peak
by goingsolo
Lookout Peak is a little known and rarely climbed conglomerate of rocks which rises to over 12,000 feet. It is one of the easiest "climbs" in the Little Lakes Valley area as technical skill and equipment are not required, although certain areas do require handholding of rocks. The second and third photos show some of the steep angles and the travelogue photos show us doing some climbing
We summited Lookout Peak in June, 2007 on the first day of summer under clear skies and mild temperatures. We were the only ones on the summit, and, according to the summit register, the only ones to summit for over a year.
More information and photos are available in my Lookout Peak travelogue.
The Restaurant at Convict Lake

The Restaurant at Convict Lake
Although the name of the restaurant may lead you to believe that it is on the lake, it is not. It is fairly close to a lake, but unfortunately, you have to walk over a hill to actually even see it! The restaurant itself has a very cozy feel with aspen trees surrounding it! This is probably one of the nicest restaurants in Mammoth. If it is in season, the trout is exceptionally good. The grilled chicken breast is fairly good as well. They have an excellent wine list and has been rated by Wine Spectator for some of their wines!
Duck Lake
by mtncorg
You can reach Duck Lake by walking up the Mammoth Creek trail from the trailhead near Lake Mary and passing over the 10600 foot Duck Pass, going by several pretty lakes en route - Arrowhead, Skelton, Red and Barney - or you can coninue on the Mammoth Crest trail past the Deer Lakes and up a bootpath to connect with the Mammoth Creek trail at Duck Pass.
From Duck Pass, the Mammoth Crest trail descends to the lake and crosses its outlet on the southern shore, connecting shortly with the John Muir trail which is coming up from Reds Meadows and the Devil's Postpile. The trail continues to Purple Lake and Lake Virginia, ending at Mt Whitney, many miles and weeks away.
