Convenient & comfortable
Considered one of two "luxury" accommodations at Mammoth, the Village Lodge is usually rated second after the Westin Monache. However, not only does the Village Lodge come at a much lower price, but its location is also much more convenient. Both are near the Gondola at the Village, but the Westin is many steps higher than the Gondola, which, after a day of skiing, is the last thing one would want to climb! Therefore, the Village Lodge has the best location, with restaurants, shops, bars and the ski gondola right at its footsteps. The "rooms" at the Village Lodge come in the form of studios or suites, equipped with a living room (with a fireplace) and full kitchen. It is very comfortable and private. It also has a fee shuttle service to the Mammoth Airport (MMH).

Mammoth has a small pedestrian friendly area which passes for its downtown. The streets are lined with coffeeshops, restaurants and arts and crafts stores. It is a nice place to have coffee and people watch or to browse the local stores. There are also numerous gear shops for anyone who needs equipment for their outdoor pursuits. Free parking is offered in the summertime as well.
The area reminded me of the pedestrian friendly streets of Vail, without the crowds and the affluence. There are plans to develop Mammoth Lakes into a world class ski resort, or at least an attempt to do so. Hopefully, the large resort and spa and other developments will not detract from the laid back environment that is Mammoth Lakes in the summertime.

Ice Skating and/or Sledding

Can anyone recommend a good place to go sledding or Ice skating in Mammoth?

For ice skating, there is a fairly new (2008) ice rink (Mammoth Lakes Ice Rink) on Meridian. I haven't tried it, however. You can sled almost anywhere you can find a slope, but we have gone along the Mammoth Scenic Loop to find a slope away from traffic. What I would really recommend is to drive along Minaret Rd (the main road to Mammoth Mountain Main ski lodge) and a few minutes out of town you'll see a place called SLEDZ on the right that has a rope tow up a groomed hill and then inner tubes for sledding down. My kids have always loved it--you go pretty fast and its a nice smooth ride. Here's a bit about sledding from visitmammoth.com:
"Rock Creek Road is approximately 15 minutes south of Mammoth Lakes and is plowed all the way to East Fork Snopark where there is a variety of areas where you can snow play and sled.
There is also a large hill approximately 15 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes on Hwy 395 on the southbound side where the divided highway ends, just before Deadman Summit and anywhere on the Scenic Loop Road as long as you are not parked on or sledding on the road." Mammoth is beautiful--have fun!

Since I was just learning, I got the beginners lift ticket at Mammoth Mountain. It gave me access to three lifts, 7, Eagle Express, and teh Discovery Chair.
The Discovery Chair leads to hills named Sesame Street East and the like. I didn't visit this one. Rent equipment at a local shop if you don't have your own.
Inyo Craters.

There are natural craters all throughout Mammoth Mtn and this is one of them. You can hike down to the bottom. It's actually quite a whole different world. There's a murky swamp and various types of insects, birds, and plants. The other crater right next to it is much bigger and steeper and there is NO WAY that you'll be able to hike down that one.

Slocums has been around for over 20 years and has a well deserved reputation. I have enjoyed several meals there, mostly steaks, from rib eye and filet mignon to lamb. A nice wine selection and reasonable prices. The bar is busy and of course there is a happy hour. If not that hungry they have soups and salads.
Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is a short hike from the Rainbow Falls stop on the Mammoth Shuttle or a longer 5 mile hike from the Devils Postpile stop on the Mammoth Shuttle. Since we never take the easy route, we hiked the longer 5 mile trip. This was also due to the fact that neither of us read the shuttle guide and did not know that there was a separate Rainbow Falls trailhead stop. But it was a beautiful late August day in Mammoth and we didn't mind the extra few miles.
The walk is not overly strenuous and passes some areas nearly barren after fires which swept through several years back, in 1992 and dubbed the Rainbow Fire, or so I read, and, as we all know, everything you read on the internet is completely accurate. You'll find plenty of people hiking the labrynth of interconnected trails in the area.
The falls are hardly impressive in stature, in a state where nearby Yosemite's falls tower plenty higher. But you don't have the Yosemite Valley crowds here either and that is a definite plus. On a clearer day, which you'll usually find in Mammoth, you'll see the rainbow prism reflecting off the 100 foot falls. We didn't have such a clear day so we just enjoyed the spray of mist from the falls before heading back.
