Great Place to Stay and Play!

I was lucky enough to stay at Shade during my husband's office Christmas party. We live close by so I never thought I would be staying at the hotel- we usually just visit the Zinc Lounge in the lobby which is a fun place to grab a drink and meet friends.

These rooms are amazing!

The bed is a memory foam that really molds to your body- offering an amazing night sleep. They bed frame is a gorgeous dark wood with a great built in table for breakfast in bed :)

The bathroom is super modern and has really cool lights that change color for effect and also they are said to be "mood therapy".

Also- this hotel was decorated and designed by Christopher Lowell- Interior Design guru and tv star- which a cool little fact that I surely appreciated.

Unique Quality: The penthouse has a built in bar with beer on tap, plasma TVs and lots of comfy couches. This really is a great place to party with a big group after the bar downstairs closes- we got to hang out in here and a great time was had by all!

Hollywood at the Beach

When Shade opened up in Manhattan Beach, it brought in some elements that were previously missing from Manhattan: (1) an upscale, luxury, boutique hotel; and (2) a trendy, Hollywood-style crowd. Hard core Manhattan Beach traditionalists are angry that a yuppie, trendy spot like Shade has invaded their town. All of the yuppie, trendy folks are happy that there's an upscale "hip" place to go. While I tend toward the traditionalist crew and feel more comfortable throwing them back at Shellback or Ercole's, I have to admit, I'm a fan of Shade. While the crowd can be unbearable, its a nice place to grab a drink and hang out when you feel like a nicer option. On nice days during the summer, the roof top deck is the perfect spot for a sundownder!!!

Staying at Shade is a treat. While the rooms aren't big and very pricey (to say the least), they're modern and very upscale. I personally love the fact that each room has tempurpedic mattresses. You'd have to have a serous case of insomnia to not be able to get a good night sleep in one of those babies.

Unique Quality: Trendy, stylish boutique hotel with quality bar/lounge. Shade was one of 19 US hotels named to Conde Naste's "Hot List" in 2007.

Slim Shadey

Shade is a very sleek, 'dwell magazine' kind of place a few blocks up the pier in the main downtown area of Manhattan Beach. Shade is a great place for drinks and has a rockin' night time scene packed with cougars, cougars in training and their prey. The food is pretty good and is your standard high-end small plates boutique expensive food bar food. It's good, but it's not something you won't find anywhere else that's pricey. The nice thing about Shade is that it's in Manhattan Beach downtown and is a great walkable distance to many bars, and restaurants and the pier. VT sometimes had quarterly meetings here and then pop over to Petros for dinner. The farmer's market is just around the corner too.

Unique Quality: The location of this place is great and the rooms are elegant and modern. Shade has a good bar scene, and is just up the hill from the ocean. It's a great base for exploring the LA area if you want to stay by the ocean, but need to be farther south than Malibu.

Manhattan's Boutique Hot Spot

Shade hotel is amazing! It is a contemporary boutique hotel with a relaxing aura and is close to the best restaurants and nightlife Manhattan Beach has to offer. It's pricey but worth the pretty penny if you take advantage of the great rooms and surprisingly trendy nightlife. The rooms all have tempur-pedic beds (the foam beds that NASA created and apparently you can drop a bowling ball on one end of the bed without spilling a glass of wine -which is sitting on the other end of the mattress). The rooms also have jacuzzi baths and are outfitted in dark cherry wood and soothing colors.

The hotel has beach cruiser bikes to rent (not sure if you have to pay extra for them) which are a staple of the south bay lifestyle.

Unique Quality: Nightlife is insanely popular and the upstairs "dipping pool" is quite refreshing even though it's not a typically 'cold' swimming pool. In Manhattan Beach, there is a city ordinance disallowing homes owners and business owners to have roof-top pools (I believe this is for noise control). Hence, Shade has a "dipping pool" on the roof that stays at roughly 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer and can be brought to a nice boil to become a hot tub at night.

Upscale Boutique Hotel in downtown M.B.

I've never stayed here, but I've seen the rooms, and visited the hotel several times. A few of my friends have stayed here and loved the location (right in the middle of town). The lounge is quite a sceen on Friday & Saturday nights - Think Hollywood comes to Manhattan Beach. Good place to grab a Martini.

I don't think this is a very quite place to stay...Judging from the central location.

Unique Quality: Sun deck and small pool on the roof. Partial view of the ocean.

Hollywood comes to Manhattan Beach

Friends have stayed at Shade and tend to have good things to say about it. Definitely for the younger crowd. Centrally located in Manhattan Beach's new outdoor mall area just east of the pier on Manhattan Beach Blvd.

Unique Quality: Has a pretty swank cocktail lounge downstairs where many hipsters start their night off. Hotel Bar closes at 11:00 on weekends (homes across the street).

It's A Super Duper Hotel

My boyfriend and I had a great stay here. Its a new hotel right in Downtown Manhattan Beach - great location in a new open-air mall development. The hotel is modern with soft accent colors that invokes feelings of peace and comfort. The bar is super trendy right now and although it closes at 11pm, you will for sure be waiting in line on the weekends to get in. They serve great appetizers and breakfast. The rooms are awesome- very unique and nothing like you've stayed in before. There are only 38 rooms and a couple of suites. Each room had a tempurpedic mattress, a whirling fireplace, a flat screen TV, and a high end jacuzzi tub. The mini bar is equipped with a blender, espresso machine, and shaker. The shower is lined with stones and the bathroom ceiling is lined with lights that change colors every 5 seconds. Its comfortable and very nice. And its located next to a french bakery, a couple good restaurants, and a great spa.

Downtown Manhattan Beach Boutique Hotel

This place is brand new and looks great. The location is perfect because it is walking distance to everything Manhattan Beach has to offer. It is in the new multipurpose center on the corner of Manhattan Beach Blvd and Valley Drive, called Metlox (which is named after the old pottery factory which used to be there). I'll update this as i learn more about it.

More about Shade

Shade Hotel Manhattan Beach - Oasis In A Desert of Mediocrity

by TripAdvisor Member BryDU

I do A LOT of business travel across Asia Pacific, the US and Europe. Simply stated, the Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at - anywhere! It is world class. The location is awesome - close to the airport but still in a very nice part of town. The hotel is hip without being pretentious. The rooms are incredible (big jacuzzi tub, personal espresso machine, free wireless network, etc.).

But the service is what really shines. On my first stay two weeks ago I managed to leave a bag in my room with $100 of stuff I had purchased while in Manhattan Beach. If you've travelled a lot you know your chances of getting anything back are about zero. Whoever cleaned my room found the bag, actually took it to the front desk (after having spoke with management I learned they actually care enough to pay their staff a decent wage so they don't have to supplement their income with guest leftovers), who then called all around to find the best way to return the bag to me. Anyone can put a smile on and call it good service. But going out of your way to make a real difference is service that is all too rare. The people at Shade Hotel are sincerely pleasant people.

I am making Shade Hotel my destination of choice while in LA. I would recommend you do the same. Then again, maybe you shouldn't - that will just make it harder for me to get an available room.

By far the Best Hotel in the South Bay

by TripAdvisor Member doctorleo

After having travelled throughout Europe and stayed in the most Luxurius of 5 star hotels (San Pietro, Villa De Este, etc..), Shade Hotel ranks right up there at the top of the list. Each detail had been carefully and elegantly thought out. A true gem in the heart of it all.

New mexican restaurant in Manhattan Beach - Muchos

by thyrkas

Has anyone been to, or heard about Muchos in Manhattan Beach? Thanks!

Re: New mexican restaurant in Manhattan Beach - Muchos

Delicious food and great atmosphere. Mucho is a modern Baja fantasy of margaritas, ceviche and more serious entrees like Chilean sea bass. It's a must try!

Re: New mexican restaurant in Manhattan Beach - Muchos

Can you tell me where it's located? We will be in Manhattan Beach in the fall, probably staying at The Belamar; would it be near there?

Re: New mexican restaurant in Manhattan Beach - Muchos

by giampiero6

Mucho is not far from there, although the Belamar is near sepulveda at the eastern extreme of Manhattan beach...not in the downtown area. You're only a 5 minute car ride from downtown which is where Mucho is. It's sort of trendy, young, and a hot spot of sorts. I highly recommend you try Petros and Pain Quotidien and shade hotel for food, cocktail. Do NOT recommend the restaurant Beaches.

Thanks again, G. We are just doing an overnighter on our way to Mexico City, so probably not up for too much.

Is it walkable to Mucho's?

Re: New mexican restaurant in Manhattan Beach - Muchos

by madamx

Also is the Belamar a big party spot? This is one of those times we'd like to get a good night's sleep! ;o) We will be there on a Saturday. The reviews look good, and it's very close to the airport. Would we be better off at Shade? -- Shade is a bit more than we'd like to spend this time in the LA area.

Re: New mexican restaurant in Manhattan Beach - Muchos

by giampiero6

Gotcha. Belamar is not a big party spot. It's on a main artery (sepulveda) away from the downtown pedestrian area, and about 2 miles from the beach. It's not really walkable to Mucho or downtown. Well I suppose it is walkable technical, but it's not really a pedestrian friendly stroll. Grab a cab for a 5 minute ride to MB - you'll really enjoy the pier, the little down or dinner at a restaurant. Recommend Rocknfish restaurant, and sunset on the pier. You can't go wrong!! Petros is good. Shade is a party spot so if you're there on the weekend the lounge is certainly hoppin.
