A perfect get-a-way

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband and I decided to take a break from the hecticness of the Bay Area (California) and landed at the Joshua Grindle Inn which we can only describe as more than we hoped for and a fabulous experience. The building is charming, clean and comfortably but well decorated--exactly correct for it's historic status. We stayed in a room in the front of the house with a view of the extensive gardens, the hillsides and a distant ocean view. Awaiting us was a half bottle of locally produced wine and cookies in our room. The communal parlor had afternoon tea and biscotti as well as newspapers, various types of reading material, and of course some interesting and lovely people to talk to. The owners cooked a fabulous breakfast each morning and are wonderful hosts with great suggestions for activities, restaurants and whatever you might need. We had a wonderfully relaxing three days with walks, shopping, meals and surrounded by friendly, warm people. It was a definite trip that we will repeat other years and wouldn't consider staying anywhere but the Joshua Grindle Inn. We have stayed in bed and breakfasts all over Europe and know quality when we experience it.

This Must Be Heaven!!

We have stayed at the Joshua Grindle Inn a couple of times a year for the past 5 years and have NEVER had a stay that was not fabulous.

Cindy and Charles, the innkeepers, are warm and caring, doing everything in their power to make you feel well cared for and comfortable. They are always looking for ways to improve your stay and recently, for example, have added a terrific masseuse to their staff.

Breakfasts are great and one of the things we most look forward to are the family style meals that give us a chance to talk to interesting people from all over the world.

Wonderful B&B

I spent 3 nights at the Joshua Grindle Inn on a spontaneous getaway by myself! It was the perfect spot for me - it felt very safe, private, comfortable and relaxing!! They also have 9 seats at the breakfast table - so you don't have to feel the least bit awkward traveling single! That was a bonus for me! The breakfast company is also a really nice thing when traveling alone - so you have a little bit of built in communal time.

The property was beautful with a well tended garden with flowers all in bloom. The room was spotless, the bed very comfortable and the spa tub an added plus! They also have onsight massage services available - and just a few steps from your room! Very nice.

The owners/Inn Keepers, Charles and Cindy are great. I felt welcomed and taken care of from the moment I made my reservation and throughout my stay. They both put a lot into the details and they're great.

There is lots to do nearby and you can walk to all of the shops and restaurants in the village.

Definitely a place to return to again and again!

Respite by the Sea

We just returned from a wonderful 4 day, three night stay at the Joshua Grindle Inn. This was our fifth visit to the Inn and it just gets better and better. After enduring several weeks of above normal temps in the S.F. area, we were treated to cool, foggy days, warm fires in the parlor, relaxing massages on a misty afternoon, comforting tea and sherry in the afternoons and delicious breakfasts each morning. Our room was filled with antiques, quilts and all the luxuries of a fine hotel. The innkeepers, Cindy and Charles, made our anniversary celebration a special one. The proximity of the Inn to the shops and restaurants of Mendocino allowed us to walk to dinner (Cafe Beaujolais...outstanding), to check out the galleries and savour the ocean views. At the end of this visit, I bought the Inn's cookbook, so that we can attempt to recreate some of the ambience of Joshua Grindle in our own kitchen. We look forward to returning to this little jewel by the sea in the near future.

Magnetic Mendocino Inn

We had the pleasure of experiencing why Joshua Grindle Inn (JGI) is currently voted #1 B&B in Mendocino by TripAdvisor. We like to do our research first, select a few places of interest, & then see how they fare on TripAdvisor. Reviews were right on & we share our pleasant experience at the JGI.

Our itinerary of Northern California July 14-26 started in Napa (see Napa River Inn review), followed by Healdsburg (see Honor Mansion Inn review) and then to misty Mendocino where we stayed 3 wonderful nights at the JGI.

Who are we: 34 & 40 years of age who enjoy the unique experiences of travel.

We took advantage of the JGI Mendocino Music Festival (MMF) Package - which offered a 2 night discounted room rate for the saltbox cottage, JGI obtained festival tickets for our choice concert (not included in price, but they got us front row seats with 800+ in attendance) & post concert treats (a bottle of Brutocao port & chocolates) awaited us in our room after the show!

Fine customer service was obvious before we arrived & continued throughout our stay. Making reservations was smooth & mainly via e-mail. Charles was prompt to reply to our questions & even extended the package discounted room rate for a third night. It wasn’t our original plan, but we obliged & are glad we did. This was the only Inn to offer a discounted rate for a 3rd night stay throughout our visit so we really appreciated that little break. (PS. They also offer special rates for single travelers). Charles also inquired where we would be arriving from so he could suggest a scenic route-so over the wine valleys & through the Redwoods we go, on Route 128, on our way to Mendocino! Motion Sickness Prone Warning-although absolutely beautiful, if you are prone to motion sickness, you may enjoy the twists & turns of Rte 128 more as the driver or as a front seat passenger +/- proper medication. (Of course, the same is true of Highway 1.)

JGI is easy to find, conveniently located (walk to the village), & you might think you’ve arrived at the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. We can now truly appreciate why they share so many website photos of the flowers & species that adorn their property. It reminded us of English countryside gardens & is quite special. In fact we never felt the need to go to the “other” gardens. They have one fabulous gardener.

We arrived at the JGI at 2PM. Our North Cypress saltbox cottage was ready to go & we had some guests waiting for us…delicious Mendocino Cookie Company cookies & a split of Husch Innkeeper’s Reserve Chenin Blanc. The photos & description of the cottage are accurate on the website so we won’t go into that here. We especially enjoyed the privacy of the room and its spacious yet cozy charm. The gas FP was perfect for those cool Mendocino mornings & evenings. We took advantage of the DVD player & their video library and the afternoon goodies in the parlor. Since the primary purpose of our trip was to unwind & relax, we are always interested in bed comfort & were not familiar with the “hypoallergenic Swedish Memory Foam "Dream Bed" they advertise but we can attest that it was quite comfy & we had some of our best sleep here! The bathroom was also spacious, and modern with good water pressure & nice amenities.

Breakfasts were wonderful, filling & varied --we enjoyed delicious Strawberry Stuffed French Toast, Mushroom Quiche & Vegetable Frittata as main entrees each day & in addition there was fresh fruit, cereals, granola, fresh squeezed OJ, delicious loose teas, etc. available. We enjoyed our mornings on the wrap around porch with full view of the gardens & the misty fog rolling in! Dining inside is also available. Just a side note, don’t pass up the ground coffee beans provided in the room-it was surprisingly bold & probably the best cup on our trip. Although breakfast is mainly self service, Christine & Charles were always there to be sure all was well & to give tidbits or tips for those interested. They also share their recipes in a cookbook available for sale.

Aside from just simply relaxing, exploring the artsy village of Mendocino & listening to Tuck & Patti under the big white tent, some other activities we enjoyed: shopping the Friday Farmer’s Market (a beautiful bouquet of flowers can be yours for just $10); strolling the rugged Headlands coastline (easy hiking) ; relaxing while watching the seals at MacKerricher State park (a short drive) & we were lucky to spot a whale while there; & exploring the glass beach (Charles gave us some baggies to start our very own glass collection).

Of course we ate well too. We enjoyed dining at the Moose Café (interesting shrimp appetizer), 955 Ukiah, the MacCallum House (delicious ice-cream) & we also had great burgers for lunch on Saturday at the Irish Pub (this was the one place where we felt like we were hanging with the locals). The village ice-cream shop offers up some great scoops & the Chicago dogs were a big hit. We would skip the Chocolate Company next time around-we didn’t enjoy our 2 pieces at $4.50-it felt more like an obligation.

Just because we left Sonoma & the other valleys behind, we were hardly removed from the selections of California’s liquid gold. We chose not to venture out to the wineries (about 45 minutes away) once Cindy highly recommended a visit to the 2 village wine shops. At the MMF, we had the pleasure of being seated next to Mark Bowery, one of “The Wine Shop” experts. We were sure not to miss out on some tastings & honest advice. More than 2 hours later, Troy returned with a quite a wine list en route to DE. We are quite pleased with our selections & we think you may also enjoy a visit there over a visit to the wineries. {P.S At the recommendation of Dan, the other Wine Shop guy, we did some googling to discover that Mark is quite well known for his palate & fine recommendations. Above all, he is one of the nicest people we met!)

We truly enjoyed our visit to the JGI & the pace of Mendocino- peaceful, calm, & laid back. It was obvious that the JGI embraces this lifestyle too but without sacrificing comfort & high expectations. Charles, Cindy & their staff are a true representation of Mendocino. They were present in just the right amount of doses, they provide a comfort & friendly atmosphere & the service was warmly accommodating until the very end. Charles gave us one more recommendation for lunch for our trip south to Olema. We took his advice & enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the River’s Edge (a nice wine list) in Jenner where the Russian River meets the ocean.

Thanks to the Charlie, Cindy & Christine for a fabulous first visit to Mendocino. We thought your smooth operation most impressive in light of transitioning innkeepers as Christine was just 3 days away from pursuing life’s next adventure after 20 years of inn keeping. We wish each of you continued success & we hope to return someday.

To Charlie & Cindy, do you offer a “JGI special package” for participation in your “adopt a highway” program. We would love to come back and join you.

Loved Joshuah Grindle

by A TripAdvisor Member

On a trip up the coast of California and Oregon, we happened upon the Joshuah Grindle Inn in Mendecino, CA. Out of a 13-day trip, this was the highlight of that trip. I have stayed at many B & B's and this was by far the best. It is beautiful, quaint, the rooms are beautifiully decorated, the breakfast was delicious, you have your own bathroom, and everything you might need can be found in your room.

Charles and Cindy know how to treat their guests. This is a must if you are ever in Mendecino.

Oh, the Breakfast!!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Extremely high level of personal service from innkeepers. Homemade breakfast of the highest quality. Clean, modern room. Astonishing garden with unusual plants that thrive in unusual coastal climate. What more could you want? Also special room rate for single travellers, a real bonus.

Nice owners, average inn

by A TripAdvisor Member

Very nice owners. Unfortunately, the inn itself was quite average. The food was definately not up to par with some of the nicer b&b's my wife and I have stayed in. Our room, which was the most expensive room at the inn, was rather small, dated and showed signs of wear and tear. All in all, our stay was expensive and did not meet our expectations.

Wonderful Place To Relax

by A TripAdvisor Member

Stayed at this wonderful B&B for the weekend and found the hosts to be very charming. The breakfasts that are made remind one of great resturants where you savor each bite of the food. Our room, which according to our hosts was once a chicken coop, had excellent decor and created an atmosphere that we could unwind in. If you want a relaxing weekend with friendly and informed hosts, this is the place to stay.
